BACKING CASE.
Application filed October 28, 1920. Serial No. 420,262.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEROY C. DOANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packing cases, and more particularly to packing cases for containing fragile articles.
My object is to provide a packing case for fragile articles which will permit the packing case to be shipped and handled with ordinary care and which will result in a minimum of breakage of the fragile articles.
Although not limited in use thereto, the.
packing cases embodying my invention find particular application as containers for glass reflectors and shades and associated parts. Heretofore, glass reflectors and shades were packed in boxes or barrels with excelsior, straw, paper or other packing material. Unless the packing material was carefully placed around the glass reflector or shade, the reflector or shade would shift around in the container and become cracked or broken. Packing cases embodying my invention prevent shifting of the glass article contained, are light in weight, contain no mussy packing material and are very readily assembled for service.
My invention consists substantially in providing a container for the fragile articles and means for firmly supporting without. rigidity the fragile articles in the container in such a way that they are out of contact with the container or with each other; More specifically, I prefer, to provide supporting means cut to substantially the same contour as that of the fragile article and placed in the container so as to firmly support the article without danger of shifting. I
My invention will be more readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a packing case embodying my invention; Flg. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting means with the container removed; and Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view-of the packing case of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawing, the container 10 receives the supports 11 and 12 which are bent at an angle in the center so as to permit the ends of each support to occupy ad acent corners of the container. The supports or members 11 and 12 are cut to the shape of the contour of the reflector or shade 13 when the reflector or shade is centrally supported by them and in addition to supporting the reflector or shade also revent the lateral displacement of the re ector or shade. Each end of the supports 11 and 12 is engaged by a member 14 which serves to maintain the position of the members 11 and 12 relative to the container 10 as well as relative to the reflector or. shade 13. Each member 14 consists of a single strip of material folded so as to form a pair of triangular prisms having a common edge fitting in the corner of the container 10 and between whose adjacent sides is placed an end of the support 11 or 12.
Thus the supports 11 and 12 are firmly held in a substantially vertical osition and the reflector or shade 13 is place in the nest formed thereby. A cover 15 of substantially the same size as the inside of the container 10 is then placed over the shade 13 and its supports. In order to increase the utility of the container 10, I preferably place two shades in each container. In this case a second cover 16 similar to the cover 15 is placed on the cover 15. A shade 13 is then placed on the cover 16 and supports or members 11 and 12 similar to the supports 11 and 12 are placed over the shade 13 and are maintained in substantially a vertical position by the members 14 similar to the members 14. For the material of the parts of the packing case I prefer to use the usual corrugated board or similar material.
In use, the parts of the packin the shades 13 and 13 are placed together in the container 10 in the manner reviously described. The flaps of the si es of the container are folded over the top and sealed together in the usual manner. If desired, the usual tray of fittings such as socket, holder and supporting chains may be included in the container by placing the tray overthe shade supports 11 and 12.
While I have shown an embodiment of the packing case of my invention in which two shades of comparatively simple contour are placed, I do not wish to be limited thereto as modifications, in which a single case and shade of comparatively complicated contour or a. number of such shades may be carried, will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. Moreover, myinvention is'adapted to carry fragile articles other than shades or reflectors.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the. United States, 1s:--
1. In a packing device, the combination of an angular container, partition members extending from corner to corner of said container and members each having a plurality of faces registering with those of said container at one of said corners and shaped to receive an end portion of and to support one of said partition members.
2. In a packing device, the combination of a rectangular container, partition members shaped to fit with the packed article extending diagonally of said container and members each having a plurality of faces at right angles to each other fitting into the corners of said container and shaped to receive an end portion of and to support one of said partition members.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of October 1920.
LEROY C. DOANE.
