Be it known that I. DONALD BAnNs MonrsoN, a subject of the King of Great Brita n, and resident of Hartlepool, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of and Apparatus for Preventing the Absorption of Air by Boiler-Feed \Vater or Other Liquid, of which the following is a specification.
WV hen water or other liquid is free of air or is in a condition of aeration below the normal, it readily absorbs air especially if the liquid is turbulent. For example, when condensate from a steam condenser is brought into contact with air, the condensate readily absorbs air and the aeration of the condensate is prejudicially increased.
The object of my invention 1s to prevent this air absorption and the principle underlying the invention is to replace the air nor mally in contact with water by steam at a suitable pressure.
According to my inventlon the a1r absorption is prevented by placing theabsorbmg "2 surface in a chamber and admitting to the chamber steam or vapour for the purpose of excluding the air from the surface of the liquid. The steam may be admitted in such quantity and at such pressure as Wlll cause a continuous outflow from the chamber, it may be through a non-return valve whereby the chamber is maintained full of steam to the practical exclusion of admitted air.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated diagrammatically means where- .by my invention may be carried into practice. In these drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a simple form of apparatus.
Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate further modifications.
Referring to these drawings and'particularly to Fig. 1 the numeral 1 designates a tank which is closed and sealed by a coverplate 2. Water flows through this tank by way of the pipes 3 and 4 and air absorption is prevented by the admission of steam which circulates continuously through the tank by may of the pipes 5 and 6.
n Fig. 2 I have shown the application of my invention to a recording device for measuring the flow of liquid. In this figure the recording device or stylus not shown is controlled by the float 18 in the usual way. The water enters the closed tank 19 by way of the pipe 20, and flows through the V notch 21, passing out through the pipe 22 in accordance with the usual practice. Air absorption is prevented or minimized by the admission of steam through the pipe 23 whence it flows in a continuous stream through the closed tank 19 and passes out through the non-return valve 24.
In Fig. 3 a somewhat similar arrangement is shown. In this case the water enters the tank 25 by way of the pipe 26 and flows through the opening 27 in the partition 28 to the air sealed chamber 29 whence it flows through the V notch 30 to the lower level, as indicated in the drawing, this level being maintained by the weir 31 at'a height sufiicient to ensure thesealing of the chamber 29. Steam is admitted to this sealed chamber 29 through the pipe 32 and passes out by way of the pipe 33 which maybe filled with a non-return valve indicated at 34. It will be understood that the arrangements hereinbefore specifically described and illustrated are given byway of example only and do not exhaust the possible methods of carrying my invention into practice.
For instance, the invention can be applied advantageously to feed tanks maintained under any suitable pressure either above or below the atmosphere and particularly in tanks in which feed water is deaerated by being heated and maintained in active circulation as by a steam jet.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that thesteam has two possible functions.
In the first place it blankets the exposed surfaces and prevents any air. getting into contact with it, and secondly it may act as a. carrier to carry ofl any air which may, in some circumstances, be given off. The aerated steam which passes oif may be led to an auxiliary condenser or suitably elsewhere.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The, method of preventing degassed liquid from re-absorbing gases in a container said method consisting in causing the liquid to enter and leave the closed container below the water level in said container whereby the surface of said liquid is maintained quiescent and causing a current of the vaporized liquid to flow continuously across the whole surface of the liquid within the container.
