GUSTAF A. BERG, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BOTTLE-WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed June 13, 1921. Serial No. 477,088.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAr A. BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle washing machines and more particularly to machines of the general character stated in which rotatable brushes are employed forthe internal and external cleaning of bottles such as milk bottles and the like. The invention has for its object to provide amotor driven washing machine in which provision is made for the positive and accurate mounting and driving of brush-carrying spindles and which will be relativelysimple and inexpensive in construction and organization taken inconnection with high efliciency and general superiority in service.
Bottle washing .machines of this general character as ordinarily constructed have the disadvantage of imperfect driving and mounting means for the spindles thereof, lack of portability, and many other disadvantages such as frequent breakage of bottles when the brushes loosen in their chucks due to wear, and the like; A very frequent cause of trouble is'in belt slippage,
' spindles as in use the washing water employed splashes over the drive means and acts as a lubricant so retarding "and interfering with the bottle washing operation.
In accordance with the invention, and in the preferred practice thereof, I provide a base in which a plurality of hollow rotatable double-ended spindles are mounted, a superposed electric motor,.and means of positivedrive between the motor and all of the Furthermore, a water-proof gear casing or houslng is formed in connection with or mounted upon the base and the entire resulting portable unit otherwise rendered waterproof.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, combination, ass0- ciation and relative arrangement of parts,
members and features, allas hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and finally pointed'out'in claims. I j
' In the drawing: I
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sefctional' view, parts being shown in elevation, of a bottle washing machine constructed, organized and used in'accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary end view, with parts in section, taken on the line X -X=, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of designated by like reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawing, in the embodiment of the invention therein shown, A designates the base of my improved bottle washing machine, B desig nates a hollow extension of said base forming an enclosing housing or casing for the positive driving means, C designates such driving means, D designates, in each instance a brush-carrying spindle rotatably mounted in the base A, and E designates a electric motor of the enclosed type superposed upon the base A and suitably and closely connected with all of the spindles D through the positive drive means The base A is shown as preferablycom' prising a casting 7 having apertured lugs or ears 8 by means of which the portable washer may be secured in juxtaposition to a washing trough, not shown, and as having upstanding apertured motonbase rewith a hollow box-like cover 14; applied thereto, forms the gear housing or upwardly extending base extension in which the drive means C are disposed. The base A is preferably provided with spindle-receiving apertures l5.v .In the preferred construction, three horizontal bosses 16 are formed on the base A at each end thereof and the spindlereceiving apertures 15 extend through such i bosses 16, so providing a pair, of spaced ,andvin mesh with pinion 17 is an idler or intermediate driving gear 18 which is in mesh with a gear 19 fixed to the intermediate spindle-DI .Each of the'other spindles D is provided with a gear 20 whichineshes 20 With-the gear 19 atthe respective side there .of. After, all thegears and the pinion are assembled, :the cover 14 may be secured to the plate or wall 13. and suitably packed thereagainst.torenderthe gear casing liquid proof sotoinsure the retention of lubricant therein aswell as toexcludew-ater or mois- :ries of apertures let, one to, accommodate the respective projecting end of each spindle D.
The spindles D each comprise, a tube. 21.
having a bore 21 extending from end to end thereof, and are mounted for rotation one ,in each of the sets of journals providedon the base andpreferably each has both its ends projecting fromthe base to receive a chuck. :;brushes d washes; the interior of. one of y vthe bottles.
rEach such chuck preferably .comprises a "tubular-body portion 22 having a. bore 22 extending from end to end thereof and such bore-22 is preferably enlarged. and formed. with. an internal tapering thread as at22".
:Each spindle end has a corresponding exaternal tapering thread-23 to permit of the mounting-thereon of thecorrespondingchuck- At its outer end, each in rigid" relation.
"chuck is slotted as at 2 1 and externally provided with'a tapering thread 245 to which a: nut. portion 25 provided with an inter- .nal tapering'thread 25 and abrush-shank E receiving orifice is fitted. It is to be noted that by this construction I eliminate .all possibility of chuck or brush oscillationnor gyration which is a .very objectionable .fea-
ture. of machines. of: this general. nature as ordinarily constructed. It is onlynecessary to. tighten up the tapering threaded :each chuck with-its spindle and the brush I handle secured thereby.
wThe spindles'in certain embodiments of the invention being double-ended, such machine may :be used bytwo Washers or'op- .erators at theQsame time. .In eachdsuch doubleaended spindle, the brush handles,
which are preferably cylindrical, may be abutted inthe spindleiand the chuclrs tightened, whereupon a perfectly smooth running device is had. The motor "E may comprise an electric motor of any preferred .or standard voltage and power, all in accordance'with the re-v I quirements ofany given case.
An outwardly flaring splash plate 26 may be provided at each end of thegmaehine, suitable spindle apertures, 26 being' provid- .ed therein A casing Q'T mayeXtend from one suchplate26 to the other-to provide for the further waterproofingofthe machine. fyThe conductingcord orwires eleading to the motor may extend through a suitable aperture in the casing QT and ,be provided outwardly thereof. with an attachment plug, all aswill bewell understood by those skilled in -the. art/to. which'this .vention. ,appertains.
-A- novel lubricating device isgshown at each set of journal bearings and each. such device may comprise a,tube28, aperturediat v each journal bearing as at-28 ,to .receivea lubricant feeding nipple 29,,one of which is v .tapped.into each journal -,bearing.' ,Ateach ture. The cover 14 is provided with a se-.
end of thetube 28, a lubricant feediiig[cup 30 is. provided, ,so, producing. a double feed- 5 .,ing device for the spindle lubricant. I
