Be it known that I, FRANK P. TU'r'rLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushing or Polishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked) thereon.
This invention relates to apparatus adapted to be operated by a portable motor to be carried by the operator for performing varlous operations on various diiferent objects, such as pieces of machinery, the invention havlng reference more particularly to apparatus for cleaning castings or brushing or polishing generally.
An object of the invention is to provide apparatus which shall be so constructed as to be adapted to be connected with an electric motor or a pneumatic motor and to be operated thereby, which apparatus shall be adapted to carry and operate various types 'of brushing or polishing devices.
Another object is to provide an improved brush and means for operating it and which shall be adapted for brushing and cleaning either convex surfaces or concave surfaces and also fiat surfaces, such as variously curved surfaces of machinery castings.
A further object is to provide an improved brush which shall be adapted for brushing and cleaning surfaces in narrow openings or elsewhere requiring a thin brush.
vWith the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in novel apparatus and appliances including a novel wire brush and holder therefor, and an improved machine for operating the lbrush or other brushes or devices; and, the invention consists also further in the 'parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and further defined in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side view of the improved brushing machine connected withan electric motor of familiar construction; Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the brushing machine; Fig. 3 is a side view of the improved machine having a polishing wheel connected thereto; Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the improved machine minus the brush or polishing device; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the improved machine connected with portions of the motor; and, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section ofthe improved machine provided with a modified form of brush.

The improved machine with slight variation of shape of its supporting frame may be adapted to be connected with various patterns of portable motors, an example of which is illustrated for descriptive purposes, the numeral 1 indicating an electric motor having a handle 2 on one end and a frame extension 3 on the opposite end thereof, the extension having a collar 4 beyond which projects an annular bearing portion 5, a spindle 6 extending from the motor through the extension 3 and having a reduced stud portion 7 extending from a shoulder 8, the stud portion having a screw 9 thereon, so that the spindle is adapted to carry drill chucks or various other tools.
The improved machine comprises a main frame portion 10 having a cylindrical base portion 11 thereon which islof suitable diameter to embrace the bearing portion 5 which is received into a bore 12 therein. The base portion 1l has a slot 13 and ears 14 and 15 adjacent to the slot and provided with a binding screw 16, for securely clamping the base portion 11 on the bearing portion 5. The main portion 10 is hollow and receives the projecting portion of the spindle 6 and preferably has slots 17 in its side.
The main portion 10 has a spindle head 18 the spindle. The spindle 21 is connected with the spindle 6 by means of a coupler 23 which is cylindrical and has a socket bore 24 to receive the portion 7 while seated against the shoulder 8 of the spindle 6. The coupler has also a bore 25 extending from the socket bore and having screw threads 26 therein to engage the screw 9, a slot 27 extending from the bore 25 to receive the flat portion 22 whereby to rotate the spindle 21. A bevel gear 28 is secured to the outer end of the spindle 21, the latter extending beyond the portion 18. Preferably the frame portion of the machine is composedl of aluminum alloy so as to be of light weight.
The frame head 2O preferably comprlses a bearing box or bushing 29. A bevel gear 30 is arranged in mesh with the gear 28 and it has a hub 31 thereon arranged rotatably in the bearing box 29 being sufficiently long to extend through the box and beyond a bearing collar 32 secured in place, and also through a ball bearing case 33 containing bearing balls 34 which are arranged against the collar 32. The hub 31 has screw threads 35 therein engaged by a screw shank 36 which has a collar 37 thereon and a screw threaded axle stud 38 extending beyond the collar. The collar is seated against the end of the hub 31 and bears against the bearing rollers 34, so that the gear 30 and its hub may be easily rotated by means of the gear 28.

The brush holder comprises a cup havin a bottom 39 that receives the stud-38 an is seated on the collar 37, and a flaring side wall 40 extending from the bottom 39. The holder comprises also a core 41 which has a taperlng periphery 42 corresponding approximately to the shape of the wall 40 of the cup but is less in diameter than the wall and has a groove 43 in the smaller portion of the periphery. The core is adapted to constitute a nut and is screwed onto the stud v38. Brush wires 44,`corresponding to brush bristles or hairs are provided and strung on a ring 45, the ring being placed in the groove 43 while the brush wires extend thence between thewall 40 and the periphery of the core 41.
When a thin rush is required instead of the cup-shaped rush, a flat collar 46 and a similar collar 47 are provided Which have recesses 48 therein, the collars being placed on the stud 38 and secured in lace by a nut 49 with one of the collars agalnst the collar. v37, brush wires 50 being arranged between the collars 46 and 47 and connected to a ring 51 arranged in the recess 48.
When neither of the brushes are sed and the machine is required for polis ing purposes a suitable polishing Wheel or disk 52 is placed on the stud 38 against the collar 37 and secured in lace preferably by means of a washer 53 and) a nut 54 on the stud.
In practical use the apparatus is carried by hand and operated or driven by the motor with which theI apparatus frame and spindle are connected. The brush or other instrument required to be used is moved about on the surfaces requiring treatment. The cup shape brush is especially useful for cleaning the inside surfaces of frame castings or casings, especially for working into corners. When rough surfaces are found they may be smoothed off by means of any suitable grinding wheel. When polishing is required a polishing or buifng Wheel is applied to the axle stud 38. The operator will find a large number of jobs which may be advantageously done by means of this angle geared machine, without further explanation of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a brushing or polishing apparatus, a brush holder comprising a fiat bottom and a flaring side wall thereon, a screw-threaded axle stud extending through said bottom from the rear side thereof, said stud having a .collar thereon against said rear side and having also an operating shank extending from the collar, and a core screwed onto said stud and having a groove in its peripheral portion adjacent to said bottom, the front portion of said core having a greater diameter than the grooved portion of the core, in combination with a brush between said sidewall and said core and having a portion arranged in said groove.

In a brushing or polishing apparatus, a frame comprising a cylindrical base portion adapted to embrace a bearing portion of a motor frame, said base portion having a slot in its wall and also ears on opposite sides of the slot, a hollow main frame portion extending from said base portion and having a lateral arm adjacent to the end thereof, a head on said arm that extends parallel rela-v tively to the longitudinal axis of said main frame portion,'a bearing box in said head, and a bolt connected to said ears, in combination with a polishing device mounted on said head, and a rotatable shaft mounted in .head on said arm, a bushing secured in said frame head, and a bearing-'collar sev cured to said bushing against said frame head; a gear having a hollow hub rotatable in said bushing and extending therethrough,
