Description

Patented Jan. 31, 1933 PATNT GFF SVEN BCKSTRM, GF HELSINGFORS, FINLAND BUFFER Application led ctooer 5, 1931.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in cleaning implements and more particularly to a novel polishing device, particularly adapted for polishing automobile bodies and particularly painted surfaces.
The principal obiect of this invention is to provide a buffer or polisher which because of its shape, is capable of reaching remote points and crevices.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
ln the drawing The figure represents a longitudinal sectional view through the implement.
Referring' to the drawing it can be seen that numeral represents a frusto-conical shaped casing, open at one end, and at this end provided with a removable header 6 of cup-shape and having projecting outwardly from the central portion thereof, a hollow shank 7, within which a switch 8 can be lo cated, with a lever 9 for operating the same projecting therefrom, through an opening 10 in the shank, and through an opening 11 in the tubular covering 12 for the shank. A cover 13 of suitable insulating material is secured to the outer end of the shank, and has an opening therethrough through which the conductive wire let to the switch 8 can be trained.
Nithin the shell 5 is a motor including the field coil or coils 15 and the armature 1G operating therein and driving the armature shaft 17, which at one end is journaled into the header 6 as at 1S and at its opposite end, as at 19, in the thickened portion 2O of the conical-shaped casing 21.
At the reduced end of the shell 5 and eX teriorly thereof, is the gear :22 suitably secured to the armature shaft 17 and meshing with the intermediate gears 23 on the counter shafts 24. Smaller gears 25 are also keyed to Serial No. 567,034.
brushes engaging the commutator, while numeral 29 represents the conductor wires eX- tending from the switch 8 to the field of the motor, with the wires 30 indicating the connections between the field and the brushes 28.
cup-shaped shell 3l is externally tliread 55 y ed at its enlarged end for engagement into the enlarged end of the casing 21, whereby the casing and shell 31 are fined together. lnterposed between the reduced end (of the shell 31 and the shank 7 ant-frictional mount 32', so that the shell 31 rotates around the shank 7.
A. resilient pad of rubber or the like is denoted by numeral 33 and is suitably secured over the entire outer surface 21 including the thickened end portion 20. A jacket of cloth or other suitable material 34 can be arranged over this pad in a removable manner, so that when the same becomes soiled, the same can be removed and 70 replaced by another cloth.
lt can now be seen, that by operating the switch 8 to close the motor circuit, the motor can operate to drive the armature shaft 17 and through the gears 22, 23 erate the shell 21 which carries a pad 33 and covering 34.
While the foregoing specilication sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what 85 wardly of the large end 0f the casing, a mo- 90 is a ball bearing cf the casing and 25, op-
tor in and concentric With the shell, said shell being provided Wit-h a handle journaled through the large end of the casing, drive means between the motor and the casing, said drive means comprising a shaft driven by the motor, a ring gear on the inner side of the casing, and gears between the shaft and the ring gea-r.
2. A bnier as described in claim l and having the apex portion of the case thickened and recessed to provide a socket, and aV bearing mounted Within the socket for jonrnally receiving the shaft In testimony whereof I zl'iz; niy signature.
SVEN BCKSTRM.
