J. J. SHORT SAFETY RAZOR Filed Aug. 4. 1921 WITNESSES IN VE IV TOR 4 (1.50 5 U *5 W a? 4 TTORNE Y 8 Patented May 15, E923.
JOHN J. snonr, or new YORK, n. Y.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed August 4, 1921.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that 1, JOHN J. SHOR a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Ma nhat tan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Razor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to safety razors and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein a simple, strong con struction is provided.
Another object in View is to provide a simple form of safety razor whereln the blade may be readily inserted and removed and when in place is rigidly clamped against accidental movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety razor wherein an arc-shaped edge is presented with so positioned as to prevent accidental cutting of the face when the razor is in use.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a razor disclosing an embodiment of the inventlon.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through F 1gure 1 approximately on line 2-2.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through F 1gure 2 on line 3-3.
Figure 4 is a front view of the upper part of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the accompaiying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a handle of any desired kind which is preferably provided with laterally extending sections 2 and 3 welded, riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the frame 4. The forward part of this frame acts as a guard for the edge 5 of the blade 6. At each end the frame 4 is provided with enlargements 7 and 8 to which the top or clamping plate 9 is secured by rivets, weld ing or otherwise so as to present a space 10 between said plate and the fran'ie a. The blade 6 as indicated in Figure ionly fills a small part of this space so that part or all of the shavings may pass through this space though most of the lather will pass over the guarding members Serial No. 289,783.
frame f. The blade 6 is a very thin blade known as a wafer blade and is preferably provided with a reinforced back )11 as well as with a large opening 12 merging into a small opening or neck 13. A bolt 1 having an enlarged head 15 extends through the small opening or neck 13 when the parts are in operative position. A suitable nut 16 having anoperating handle or lever 17 is used for causing the parts to be rigidly clamped together.
When the parts are in the position shown in the drawing and it is desired to remove the blade, the handle or lever 17 is moved until the nut 16 is loosened whereupon the blade 6 is drawn to the rear until it may be removed by lifting the same so that the head 15 will pass through the opening 12. lVhen the blade is to be replaced, the reverse action is had and after the blade has been adjusted so that the edge 5 will project only a short distance from the inclined or chamfered edge 18 of plate 9, the nut 16 will be tightened. Preferably, the length of the blade is such that the edges which are straight will slide easily into and out of po sition but will not present an appreciable amount of loose motion.
In using the device, after the parts are removed as shown in the drawing, the blade is brought in contact with the face and drawn thereover in the usual manner. By reason of the arc-shaped formation of the edge of the frame and also of the blade, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to cut the face while at the same time permit easy shaving of the rounded parts under the chin and around the neck.
WVhat I claim is A safety razor comprising a handle mounting a U-shaped frame substantially at right angles thereto, a plate covering said frame, thus forming a slot between the frame and the cover for the insertion therein of a blade, and means carried by the cover for clamping the blade in lace.
