Be it known that I, ALFRED ALEXANDER LAWSON, a subject of the King'of Great Britain, residing at Windsor, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Key Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of what I term a key fastener, and is in'the nature of a plate which is pivoted upon the slotted escutcheon, and designed to fit over the key when the shank of the latter is arranged at a right angle to the key-hole slot to prevent the key from being pushed out of the lock from the outside, or turned, thus making it impossible for anyone to unlock the door from the outside. It is also particularly useful in preventing the loss of the key, and the passage of air and drafts through the key-hole slot.
Miore specifically stated, the invention makes use of a plate having what 1 term a compound slot opening at one side of the plate, and an elongated slot to receive the pivot for said plate, whereby the plate is mounted for vertical as well as swinging movement, necessitating a number of separate and distinct movements in order to associate the plate with the key or remove the plate therefrom, so that when'the plate is positioned over the key, it is impossible for anyone to move the plate off the key from the outside of the door.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.

indicates the usual door knob plate pro-i vided with a key-hole slot 11, in which I locked, and in which position, it is arranged at a right angle to the slot 1 It is in order to hold the key in this position, so as to prevent it from being removed from the outside of the door, or turning from the outside of the door in an ei'fort to unlock the latter, that I provide what I term a key fastener, the latter being clearly illustrated in Figure 4.
The key fastener consists of a plate 14 which may vary in size and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention, and which plate is adapted to be pivoted upon the plate 10 at an appropriate point above the key-hole slot 11. The pivot of the plate 14 is indicated at 1.5, and is received by an elongated slot 16 provided in the plate 1 1 acent the upper end thereof. The plate 1 is also provided with what I term a compound slot which is arranged substantially at a right angle to the slot 16, and opens at one side of the plate as clearly shown. Tie compound slot includes a re duced portion 17, this portion constituting the closed end of the slot, and which portion opens into an-enlarged intermediate portion 18, which is shaped to provide the opposed shoulders 19 and 20 respectively. In practice, after the door above referred to has been looked through the instrumentality of the key 12, the latter occupies the position with relation to the key-hole slot as illustrated. The plate 14 is then arranged in the manner shown in Figure 1, whereinthe shank of the key is received by the reduced portion 17 of the slot. It will be noted that when the plate is in this position. the elongated slot 16 for the pivot 15 is arranged at an inclination to the shank of the key and should the plate 141- be swung upon its pivot in an effort to separate the plate from the shank of the key, the slot 16 would be brought to a vertical position allowing the plate to drop a short distance in order to position the shoulder 19 at one side of the shank of the key, and this shoulder 19 would prevent the plate f om being moved on its pivot. Consequently, the plate could not at any time be separated from the shank of the key,'by anyone operating from the outside of the door. It is obvious that in order to sep arate the plate 14 from the shank of the key, the plate must be swung upon its pivot from the position illustrated in Figure 1 to the 1 position shown in Figure 2, and then the plate must be moved vertically in order'to move the shoulder 19 above the shank of the key, this movement of the plate being permitted by the elongated slot 16, and the plate to wholly separate the plate from going description, the nature, and advancanthen be further swung upon its. pivot will be readily,understood;
