IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,556, dated December 16, 1873; application filed July 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINOR J. COOPER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Holders, of which the following is a specification p The object of this invention is to provide means for holding buttons on the cloth while they are being sewed on; and it consists in a grooved clasp-plate, constructed as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of the button-holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1, taken on the linemw; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 1, taken 011 the line y 3 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the holder, consisting of two plates of metal, B and O, which are forked at one end, the space D between the prongs being V- shaped. One of these plates has grooves E on the inner edges of the prongs, which grooves receive the buttons F, as represented in Fig. 1. This V shape of the openings or space I) adapts the holder for buttons of different diameters. Grepresents the cloth to which the button is to be attached. The cloth passes in between the two plates, and is pressed upon the buttons by the prongs of back plate O, as the two plates are pressed together or toward each other when the holder is in use by the fingers of the operator; but there is more or less spring to the plates, which is suflicient to hold the cloth in place.
The prongs of the plate C may be curved, as seen in Fig. 8, so as to more etl'ectively hold the cloth to the button.
The operation is readily understood from the then the button is sewed on with a needle and thread, in the usual manner.
The advantages are, the fingers are not exposed to the needle, and the sewing on is performed with much greater ease than when the button is attached in the ordinary manner.
The holder may be made by riveting two plates together, instead of making the bend H, if desired; but I prefer the mode shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A button holder consisting of the claspplates B O, the plate B being forked and grooved at one end to receive and hold buttons of different sizes, substantially as de scribed.
