JOH N E..STREIB, OF AVALON, PENNSYLVANIA, AS SIGJEIOR T0 PRESSED STEEL CAR COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENN$YLVANI1L A CORPORATIDN OF NEW JERSEY.
DOOR-OPERATI NG MECHANISM.
Application filed November 6, 1920. Serial No. 422,209.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. STREIB, a citizen of the United States, residing in Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Operating 'Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dump cars of the type in which the discharge doors and any load carried thereby is supported by the discharge door operating'shaft', and has for an object the provision of a stiffening means for the discharge door to prevent its distortion, and to provide a better and more widely distributed bearing for the door upon the shaft than has hitherto been used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shoe for a discharge door, and a drum and rollers for the door operating shaft, which shoe and rollers are adapted to engage with each other to distribute the weight of the door and any load carried thereby more evenly over the shaft than has heretofore been done.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Fig. 1, is a plan view of a. discharge door and door operating shaft with the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sideelevational view of the same and Fig. 3, is a sectional view of the same taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.'
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates a discharge door, one edge portion of which is hinged to any suitable member of the under-frame, and 2 indicates the door operating shaft, which is supported by members 3 which may extend longitudinally or transversely of the car, and will support the free edge of the door.
'It will here be noted that in some cars the door may be hinged to the center sill or to the side of the car, and when so hinged the door operating shaft 2 will extend longitudinally of the car and will be supported by the transverse members of the underframe. In other types of cars the doors may be hinged to the transverse members of the underframe, and when so hinged the shaft 2 will extend transversely of the car and will be supported by the longitudinal members of the underframe.
The free edge portion of the dooris'provlded with a member 4 having spaced serrated shoe portions 5 which are connected by a web portion 6, which web portion is provided with suitable strengthening ribs. This member 4 is also provided with a downwardlydepending lug 7, to which one end of the door operating chain 8 is connected, the opposite end of such chain be ing connected with a winding drum or worm 9 which is secured to the shaft 2. At both ends of the worm or drum 9 a serrated roller 10 is provided, each of which is adapted to engage with one of the serrated shoe portions 5 when the shaft is being operated to raise. or lower the door. When the door is in closed position the shoes 5 rest on the rollers 10, and it will be noted that the door will have a number of supports distributed at its free edge, and this portion of the door will thus be stiffened against downward bending when heavy material is carried by the door or is deposited thereon, and the weight of the load on the shaft will be better distributed and bending of the shaft will therefore be less likely to occur.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a hinged discharge door, of a member rigidly secured to the under side of said door, said member having integral spaced shoe portions, a shaft arranged to be moved into and out of the path of said door, a drum on said shaft having spaced rollers, each of said rollers'being adapted to engage one. of said shoe portions, and a flexible connection from said member to said drum.
2. In a dump car, a hinged discharge door, a member rigidly secured to the underside of said door, said member having integral spaced shoe portions and a web connecting said portions, a lug extending downwardly from said web, an operating shaft arranged to be moved into and out of the path of the free edge of said door,
a winding drmn on said shaft having a 105 winding portion and a roller at each end of said winding portion, each of said rollers being adapted to engage with one of sald .shoe portions, and a flexible connection between said ln'g' and Winding portion.
3. In a dump car, a hinged discharge door, a member rigidly secured to said door having, integral spaced shoe portions, a bodily movable, shaft for operatin said door, spaced rollers on said shaft adapted to engage said shoe portions as said shaft is moved bodily, and a flexible connection between said door and shaft.
4c. In a dump car, a hinged discharge door, a member rigidly secured to the uiider side of said door,'said member having integral spaced shoe portions, a rotatable and bodily movable shaft for operating and supporting said door, a winding drum on said shaft haying spaced rollers adapted to engage said shoe portions as said shaft is rotatedand inov'e'd bodily, rand a flexible connection between said member and drum.
'5. In a dump car, a member rigidly securedto the underside of said door having integral spaced serrated shoe portions, a web connecting said shoe portions, a lug extending downwardly from said web and between said shoe portions, a bodily movable shaft for operating and supporting said door, a winding drum on 'said shaft having a winding portion and a serrated roller-at bothends of the winding portion, each of said rollers being adapted to engage with one of said shoe portions when said shaft is in door supporting position, and a flexible connection between said door and shaft, one endof said connection being secured to said lag and the other end being
