A dump car having a hopper including opposed oppositely inclined upper lixed floor sections with discharge openings therebelow, a pair o' hinged members for closing each of said openings, one of said members of each pair being hingedv along its upper edge and the other hinged along its `lower edge, each said member pivoted at its lower edge acting as a shedding member when in open position and adapted to vary the plane of ultimate discharge of material and the co-operating other member acting as a restraining member for the load during the opening movements of each pair of said members; and
operating means for each pair of said members to synchronize the opening movements thereof 'and to restrain load until said member of each pair that is door p ivoted along v the discharge of they pivoted at its lower edge reaches a predetermined downward slope.

In a dump car having a hopper section of V-orm and two dumping openings on opposite sides of the apex'thereot, the combination with an upper door pivoted at its upper edge and a lower door pivoted at its lower edge for closing each of said openings, lower door being of` greater width than its corresponding upper door and overlapping each the latter when in closed position; and means controlling kthe opening per door of each pair, during the opening movement ot' the corresponding 'lower door so as to maintainV a relatively narrow opening between the upper door and lower door of each pair until the lower door has swung to a position inclined downwardly from a horizontal plane.` -k c 27. A dump'car lhaving a longitudinally extending hopper section on each side of the movement of the up-v center sill, each hopper section includingoppositely inclined upper with oppositely arranged openings therebelow; means for closing each of said openings, each said means comprising an upper door and a lower door, the former `pivotedfalong its upper edge and the latter pivoted along its lower edge and mechanism for selectively operating each pair of doors, whereby the load may be dumped either inwardly or outwardly7 of the rails or both, including, for each pair otdoors, means for synchronizing the opening movements thereof and to restrain the discharge of the load until the lower door of the'pair reaches a predetermined downward slope.
