R. L. ESSON LOOSE LEAF BINDER AND THE LIKE Filed Sent. 5, 1921 Inllllllllllll lllll LII Patented May 15, 1923.
STATES rattan r arena r are LOOSE-LEAF BINDER AND THE LIKE.
i Application filed September To all wiiomc't may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner LYGnn'rwoon EssoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Johannesburg, Transvaal Province,-Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders and the like, of. which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to loose-leaf binders, loose-leaf ledgers,.et cetera, for temporarily binding or holding together, in book form, a number of independently detachable leaves or separate sheets of paper.
It has especial reference to that type of binder in which the parts of the binder,
et cetera which serve for binding or scour-i ing the leaves or sheets; between the covers include a screw-threaded rod or spindle arranged in one of the covers andarranged to operate an arrangement of bars or levers, which are connected either directly or indirectly to the adjustable side or end of the back, for expanding and contracting the ad justable back. i 1
The object of the present improvements is to improve the arrangement of the bars or levers and their connections and operating means, in order to obtain increased rigidity and prevent disorganization of the said arrangement or damage to the covers of the binder, et cetera, as for example by overwinding of the-threaded rod or spindle in contracting the binder.
connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a plan view of the binder with portion of the cover broken away to expose the adjusting means.
Fig. 2 is a part sectionalelevation of the hinder, the plane of section being indicated by the lotted line 0ca2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, 1, 2 de note the covers of the binder, 3, the adjustable back, 4 the thongs, of which the binder is shown provided with three. 5 is the strip of metal of U shape in cross-section, which is attached to the edge of the adjustable back 3 and is secured by means of rivets 6, to the metal plate 7, to which the links 8, 8 of the adjusting mechanism are pivotally attached. The rivets 6, also pass through the ends of the thongs 4, which are there by connectedto the back 3, and to the ad justing mechanism through the medium of The invention will be fully explained in 3, 1921. Serial No. 498,210.-
the plate 7. The ends of the reinforcing strip 5, may be additionally secured to the adjustable back 3, by means of further rivets, eyelets or the like 9. 10 represents the independently detachable. leaves secured in the binder. which engage with the thongs 4c, in the ordinary or any other manner.
11 is the right and left-hand threaded i spindle revolvably mounted in the bearings 12, 12 at or near the ends thereof and the bearing 13 intermediate the threaded 130F171 16, 16 are two links which are pivotally' attached at the one end to the nuts 15, 15
respectively. 17, 1? are two bell crank or similar levers to the shorter sides or arms 18, 18 of which the ends of the links 16, 16 are pivotally attached at 19, 19.
20 is a strip of metal which is rigidly fixed by means of a rivet 20, to the base plate 21, of the one cover 1., This strip 20, as
shown,,see Fig. 2is preferably b'ent upwardly at a suitable angle and then downwardly inclined and, as shown, is fixed to the base plate 21, as for example by means of the rivet 22, which secures the bearing 13 to the base plate. The bell crank levers 17, 17
are fulcrumed on the strip 20, by the pivot pin 23. The levers 17, 17 are placed one above the other and lie on the upwardly inclined portion of the strip 20, so that, they and their connected parts work clear of each other in the operation of the adjusting mechanism. The links 16, 16 are slightly bent downward toward their points of attachment to the nuts 15, 15. The links 8,
S are attached at one end to the longer sides or arms 24,24"*,of their respective bell crank levers 17, 17 as indicated at 25, 25*.
By rigidly fixing the pivot 23, to the base plate 21, through the medium of the strip 20, said pivot is unable to move upwardly or downwardly, and. consequently any damllO rection, expands the back and loosens the covers of the binder to allow of the removal and insertion of the leaves or sheets.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a loose-leaf binder, front and back covers, an adjustable back, a spindle having right and left-hand screw threads, a nut on each of said threads, and a pair of bell-crank levers, one arm of each of which is connected to the adjustable back and the other to one of the nuts.
2. In a loose-leaf binder, front and back covers, an adjustable back, a spindle having right and left-hand screw threads, a nut on each thread, a pair of bell-crank levers mounted on a common pivot, means for connecting one arm of each of said levers to the adjustable back, and means for connecting the other arms of said levers to the nuts.
3. In a loose-leaf binder, front and back covers, an adjustable back, a spindle having right and left-hand screw threads, a nut on each thread, a pair of bell-crank levers mounted on a common pivot, links for connecting one arm of each of said levers to the adjustable back, and links for connecting the other arms of said levers to the nuts.
4. In a loose-leaf binder, front and back covers, an adjustable back, a spindle having right and left-hand screw threads, a nut on each thread, a pair of triangular or solid bell-crank levers, an inclined piece upon which said levers are pivoted and supported, means for connecting one arm of each of said levers to the adjustable back, and means for connecting the other arms of said levers to the nuts.
5. In a loose-leaf binder, front and back covers, an adjustable back, a spindle having right and left-hand screw threads, a nut on each thread, a pair of bell-crank levers mounted on a common pivot, links for con necting one arm of each of said levers to the adjustable back, and links for connecting the other arms of said levers to the nuts, said latter links being downwardly inclined.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
