Description

w.' BOUBEUIGNON.
Bottle-Covers."
No. 145,484, Patented Dec. 16, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATIENT QFFICE.
WENDEL BOURGUIGNON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-COVERS.
Specification forming part ofLettcrs Patent No.145,484, dated December 16, 1873; application filed November 13, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, W'ENDEL BOURGUIGNON, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improved Bottlefiover, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention consists in a hinged cover packed with a yielding material,
and connected to a strap encircling the neck of the bottle by means of a screw, whereby the position of the cover is made capable of adustment, so that it may in every case be brought down firmly upon the end of the bottle, and be there secured by acatch, also adjustable by means of a screw-thread, and operating upon a cam or inclined lip upon the edge of the cover. The object of this invention is to provide a permanent cover or stopper for a bottle or jar, which shall be simple in construction and effective in operation.
Figure 1 is a side view of the cover as attached to the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a top view. Fig. 5 is a View of the strap used to connect the cover to the neck of the bottle.
In the drawing, A is a metallic shell, filled with the cork or rubber washer B. The strap 0 O is made in two parts, which are held together by the screws D and E, which are arranged for adjustment in order that the cover may fit bottles having necks of different lengths. The cover A B is hinged to the screw D, and
may be varied in its distance from the strap by turning the screw and cover in the proper direction. To the screw E is attached the arm F and catch G, which, after passing through the eye H in the lip I, is to be turned, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, thus bringing the cover A B firmly down upon the top of the bottle J. The upper surface of the lip I is beveled, so as to act, in conjunction with the screw E, in bringing the cover down firmly upon the neck of the bottle.
In adapting this improved cover to soda-bottles, and for like purposes, I arrange a tube, K, in the center of the cover, closed at the lower end by a valve, L, held to its seat by a spring, M. The bottle can then be filled with the cover closed by inserting the injecting-pipe into the tube K. The expansion of the contained gas will hold the valve tight after the bottle has been filled.
This improved cover may be used upon fruitjars, lamps, or any vessel in which fluids are to be held.
I claim as my invention The combination of the straps O O with the adjusting-screws D and E, lip I, catch G, and
cover A B, the whole operating substantially as described.
WVENDEL BOURGUIGNON.
