Be it'known thatY I, ALEXANDER WARNER, of Williamsburg, (Brooklyn) inthe county of Kings, and State of' New York, have invented a newr and useful Improvement in Means for Closing Vessels for PreservingvFruits and other substances', of whichV the following-,is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in'whi'ch- Figure 1 represents a vertical section offa preserving-jar, withv its lid or stopper removed, in illustration of my improvement, and I Figures 2 and?) inverted plans, taken through the neckor mouth and stopple of the jar, and showing the relative positions of the'stopple therein, when opened and closed by the turning of the stopple.

My invention consists in giving to the 4jar or vessel, and its lid or stopple, a valvular character, by constructing the stopple with perforations in or through it and the mouth or neck of thejar,and an elastic packing.

Referring, in the iirst instance, to figs. I, 2, and 3, of the drawing, A is a jar, and B its stopple, both of any suitable material. In or through the neck or mouth of thejanis or are one, two, or more perforations, of
any suitable shape, and said neck or mouth, that may be swelled ont for the, purpose, fitted with a rubber or other soft and elastic ait-tight gasket or packing-ring, C, likewise provided with perforations'b, corresponding to those, a, of the jar. The stopple .Bis shaped to it'down within and onor over this packingC, and cupped or hollowed and -provided with side perforations c, corresponding to the perforatons a and b, and so that,'on simply turning the stopple, (which, by`means of the gasket C, forms an ar-tight joint with the mouth of the jan) so as to bring the perforations c in or out of linie with the perforations aand a vent is establishedjfor exhausting the jar, or the same hermeticallyclosed, and which latter may be-done during the `finishing of the preserving or exhausting-process, or as it is completed, with the stopple in the same air-tight lit with therjar or its gasket as when'sa'id .vents were open, whereby-a rapid closing of the jar at the proper time is eii'ectedwith-A out any risk of air rushing in to mar the exhaustion of the jar: -Of course it is immaterial whether thejar or stopple be turned to effect-'the closing. Thejar may be exhausted through the vents formed by theperforations a, b, and c, either by the natural process of boiling the fruit or other substance to be preserved inthe jar, with the stopple litted to it, or by connecting said vents in any suitable manner-with an air-pump for the purpose, and to effect which a wrench .may be used, furnished withtubular prongs arranged to fit the aperture a, and serving alike as arducts or c'ontinuations of the vents, an'd projections or claws to hold' on and facilitate the turning of the jar or its stopplc, to close the vents e, or puttheln outof line with the perforations a and b.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A vessel, with its lid, cover, or stopple, constructed and combined substantiallyes herein described; whereby a. vent is opened'and closed by simply turning the lid,A cover, or' stopple, or the vessel, the one relatively to the other, as herein set forth. I I
