manor-FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed June 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. Cruise, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVaco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar-Top-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for securing a jar top in place upon a jar without resorting to the screw couplings and like devices ordinarily employed in this connection and open to the objection of requiring a special construction of jar and the use of sealing means which frequently permit of leakage or of the access of air and which are in many instances affected by changes of temperature or climatic conditions; and it is the further object of this invention to provide a jar top fastener which is particularly adapted for use in connection with jars for containing preserves or articles which require the effective exclusion of air under widely varyin conditions of temperature, and with these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the, accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a perspective view of the fastener applied in operative relation to a jar as indicated in the dotted lines.
Figure 2, is a side view of the upper portion of the fastener showing the adjacent portion of the ar and the jar top in section. The fastener consists essentially of a base loop 10 which may, as shown he formed of a light cross sectionally fiat bar having reduced terminals 11 secured in any effective manner to the extremities of a cross head 12 having downturned terminals 13 fitted with eyes 14, 'said cross head being centrally formed with an eye 15 for the reception of a thumb screw 16, to thelower or inner end of which is applied a follower plate 17 having bearing contact with the jar top 18. The jar top may consist of a small flat disk 1920. Serial No. 387,260.
as indicated in Figure 2, seated upon the upper edge of the jar indicated at 19 with a suitable interposed washer or gasket 20 and obviously by means of the thumb screw any desired pressure may be applied to the jar top to cause such a tension in the base loop which extendsvbeneath the bottom of the jar as to position them in such a manner as to compensate for any variation in temperature and hence the expansion and contraction of the loop without incurring the liability of breakage or permitting looseness. Obviously in addition to the yieldability of the loop, there is a certain elasticity in the arms of the cross head which will serve to compensate for changes in temperature and the pressure as applied to the jar is-such as to not involve the risk of fracturing the latter. Moreover the depending extremities of the cross head insure the proper relation betweenthe same and the jar cover or top and minimize the tendency of the cross head to tilt or become displaced laterally, the terminal eyes of said cross head being arranged substantially in'the plane of the jar top. Thus any tendency of the car to tilt, as is likely in such devices, is offset by additional tensile strain on the loop, since tilting of the same must result in raising the eyes 14 of the cross head. i
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is As an article of manufacture, a jar top fastening device consisting of a cross head carrying a follower plate and a flexible loop to extend beneath the jar and bear upon the bottom thereof, the cross head having depending arms to which the extremities of the loop are loosely connected and serving under the tension of the loop, due to the adjustment of the follower screws, to maintain the cross head in operative position on the jar top or cover.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signature.
JAMES M. GRUSE.
