UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
SOLOMON S. GRAY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,414, dated December 9,1873; application filedv September 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SOLOMON S. GRA?, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useiul Improvement in Shirts for Gentlemens lear, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the means employed for securing the two ends ot' the neck-binding together, by means of which the size of the binding may be adjusted to the size ot' the neck of the wearer, and one shirt may be made adaptable to two or more sizes, and my invention consists in making two or more buttonholes in each end ofthe neck-binding, in combination with an adjustable or removable stud or other fastening for securing the two ends of said binding together.
As shirts are now manufactured and sold, the sizes are determined by the measurement et' the neck-binding, there being a separate size for every half inch of increase in the length of the neck-binding, from thirteen to seventeen inches in length, making nine sizes in all, and the dealer is compelled to put in a stock of nine ldozen shirts in order to be able to it his custom ers, involving a greater investment than many dealers care to make in one line of goods, it being understood that every dealer must keep several styles or patterns, both of cut and material, and a full line of each. New, it' the dealer can have on his shelves a full line of sizes of shirts by buying three dozen n shirts of each style of eut and pattern, instead ot nine dozens, as heretofore, he will be able to s. ve two-thirds of the capital new invested in shirts to invest in other lines ot' goods.
view of the upper portion of the same with the binding buttoned together, and Fig. 3 shows a moditication of the arrangement of the button-holes in the binding. y
In order to carry out my invention, I make two or more button-holes in each end of the neck-binding, said button-holes being at distances from each other of one-fourth of an inch. I prefer te make three button-holes in each end ofthe binding, as seen at a b c and c b c, though a greater or less number may be used, itl desired; and to secure the binding together about the neck, I use a movable stud or other fastening, d, instead of a xed button. It' the stud d be placed in the button-hole b and is buttoned into b', one size of shirt is obtained. It' a larger size is desired, the stud d should be set in a and buttoned into af, and it' a smaller size is wanted, the stud cl is placed in c and buttoned into c ,thus making one shirt adapted to three regular sizes, with the stud in the center ot' the neer; in front and rear in each ease, and, in addition, if, as it sometimes happens, an intermediate size is desired, the stud may be set in b and buttoned into a or c, in which case the stud d will be slightly out of center, or, in other words, will not be equidistant from the front stud or button, measuring in opposite directions around the neck; but the difference will be so slight as to be unobjectionable.
lhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A shirt provided with two or more buttonholes in each end of the neck binding or band, in combination with a movable stud or fastening for securing said band together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SOLOMON S. GRAY.
