Description

May 1, 1923. v 1,453,941
1 J. F. MADDEN v THREAD GUIDE Filed Nov. 29 1922 Jesse]? I Jim @W Patented May 1, 1923.
JESSE r. MADDEN, or BROOKLYN, new YORK.
THREAD GUIDE.
Application filed November 29, 1922. Serial No. 604,038.
To all whom it may concern Bt it known that I, JEssnF. M DDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to thread guides for textile machinery.
liy object is to provide a device of this character which can be easily threaded and unthreaded by the operator whenever desired, but which cannot become unthreaded by accident.
A leading feature of the invention consists of a double hookarrangement at the upper end ofthe guide, the hooks being spaced from each other and disposed at right angles to the line of travel ofthe thread, and opening in opposite directions.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the device complete.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but with one of the hooks broken away to show the other hook more clearly.
Fig. 3 is a side plan of one form of the device.
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same; and,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line of Fi 4.
The guide is made preferably of porcelain, and in a variety of sizes, with possible slight variations to suit the different textile machines with which it is to be used.
Various kinds of guides have been used with textile machinery to guide the many different kinds of threads used in weaving, out there has always been more or less trouble with the thread becoming unthreaded verse slot 2, which divides said end into two spaced parallel sections 3 andl. Thedevice is "further provided in its upper portion with an elongated vertical opening 5 extending therethrough at right angles to said transverse slot and extending up wardly into the lower part of said slot.
The spaced portions 3 and l are respectively provided with the similar horizontal slots 6 and 7 leading out in opposite directions from. the vertical opening 5 and at the bottom of the transverse slot '2, thereby forming the upper end of the device into' two spaced parallelhooks openingin op posite directions from each other.
The transverse slot 2 maybe flared at its I upper end if desired to render it easier to enter a thread thereinto.
' The lower end of the device has avertical opening 8 for securingthe device "to the various makes of machines with which-it is to be used. A screw orfwire may be inserted into said opening, and if desired, the
connection may be made rigid by means of cement.
In operation, a thread is entered into the guide by passing a horizontal section thereof down in the slot 2 to the bottomwill bring them into the vertical opening.
5 which forms the eye or traveling space of the guide. It will. then be impossible for the thread to become accidentally unthreaded. no matter whichway it pulls, or which way it rebounds in the eye,-whether up or down or to one side or the other If it flies upwardly. it will be rebounded by the upper end of the eye; and the oppositely opening hooks 3 and 4 will prevent it from moving laterally out of the eye in either direction. so that the thread cannot become un threaded while the device is in operation unless the thread breaks.
Hence it will be seen that I have provided a guide which permits the free and easy passageof the thread there-through, and which can be quicklyv and conveniently threaded and unthreaded when desired, but which cannot become unthreaded by accident when in operation.
Having now described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described,
protect an elongated body having transverse slot in its upper end to form said end into two spaced sections, the device also having an elongated opening extending through the same at right angles to said slot, said spaced portions having individual slots leading out in opposite directions from said elongated opening, whereby to form the upper part of said member into two spaced hooks opening; at opposite sides of. the member.
'2. In a device of the character described, an elongated member having means at one end for engaging and holding the same in operative position, said member having a transverse slot in its upper end dividing said end into two spaced sections, said member also having an elongated opening leadingtheretlirough at right angles to said transverse slot and extending upwardly into said slot, said spaced sections being provided at the bottom of said transverse slot with horizontal slots leading out in opposite directions from said elongated opening, to form the upper part of the guide into two spaced hooks opening at opposite sides of the device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
J ESSE F. MADDEN.
