J. H oRAN CONTAINER FOR PACKED lBOWDER AND FOODS-TUFFS Filed July 21 1921 Patented May l, i923.
JEREMIAH HOB/AN, OF NE YORK, N.
CONTAINER FOR PACKED POWDER AND FOODSTUFFS.
Application filed 111157.21, 1921. Serial No. 486,456.
To @ZZ 1li/10m 'it may concern Be it known that I, JnREMiAi-r Horan, citizen of the United States, vresiding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Packed Powder andFoodstufis, of`
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toV a container for packaged` foodstuffs such as cereals, being designed more particularly for use in connection with cereals or the like whichare sold in paper orcardboard cartons.
`The invention has for an object to provide an improved container in which' such cartons may Vbe placed for `protection from mice, rats, or vermin generally and which will permit of `the material in the carton being readily withdrawn without removing the carton from the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Icontainer of this sortv which is arranged'to snugly holdv cartons of different sizes.
For further comprehension of the invenn tion, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference.' will be' had to theV following description and accompanying drawings, and tothe appended claims in which the variousvnovel features of the invention are more particularly setY forth'.
Fig. 1`.` of the'drawings is a plan view of a container constructed according tothe invention. y
Fig. 2.1is a perspectiveY view thereof.
Fig. 3. is a vertical sectional view thereof, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4. is an end View partly in section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5. is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a modified arrangement of the discharge door, this view being taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 6. is a fragmentary plan view of this modified arrangement.
As here shown my improved container is of a general rectangular shape suitable to contain the cartons in which breakfast cereals or the like are sold, having fixed bottom and top walls vand 11, Aside walls 12, and one fixed end wall 13, the other end wall being removable for insertion of the carton. A full carton is shown at in position in the container, the carton having one edge cut off to provide an opening 16 through which the food is removed.
`To provide for discharge of the food from the container the latter `is provided at the edge formed by the junctionof the top wallll and end wall 13 with'a diagonal or inclined discharge opening 18 which extends, as will be apparent, partly along each of said end and top walls. l the container the *dischargel opening 16 formed by cutting off the edge is placed in registry with t tainer. f
The opening 18 in the container isV closed by a door 20 which, vin the form `of the invention shownin Figs. 1 toll: eXtendsdiagin inserting` the carton in` y e opening 18 in. they con-.
onally of the container and is hinged at itsl upper edge to thetop wall of theV latter as at 21, andbears at its lower 'edge against the top edge of the .end wall 13. Spring fingers 22,v secured asbyscrewsto the top of the' container andfbearing on the door 20, normally urge'the' latter to Aclosed position.
Too-pen' the door 2O Iprovide a thrust bar .24 slidabl'y held in a groove 25 in theunder face of the top 11 ofthe container and ha ing: its forward end downwardly inclined and engaging ina slot in ka bracket 27 fixed to the inner face of door 20.
At its rear end this Abar 'Qlfextends upwardly through a Slo-t28 inthe top 11, being doubled forwardly uponfitself as at 29, and then backwardly over the'top in a series of parallel convolutions 30. At its eXtreme ,i
rear end this vbar is formedlwithadownturned tip 31 adapted to engage in any one of a seriesy of sockets 32 in the container top 11 to hold the door 20* open to suc-h varying extents as m ay be desired.
In order to enable cartons of smaller size than the container to be fitted into the latter with the discharge opening therein closen pair of sharp spikes 37 which project into` the carton 15 and hold the latter raised vertical dimension of the carton is less than that of the container.
The plate is adapted to be pressed against the rear wall of the carton to hold the latter securely in place, the plate being held in adjusted position bly means of a lockioo above the bottom of the container when the4 I ing bar 38 pivoted between its ends as at 39 to the plate and provided with -a fin-like handle 40 whereby it may be swung tolocking or unlocking position. In locking position this bar 38 extends horizontally between the side walls l2, being of a length to bite into the latter and so hold the plate 35 in position.
It is believed that the manner of use of my improved container' will be readily understood from the above description. The wall plate will be removed when an empty carton is to be taken out of the container and al new one inserted7 the carton being placed in the container as indicated in Fig. 3. The door may be opened for discharge of the material by pushing on thrust bar 24.
As will be apparent. the material in the container will be protected from damagey by rodents or other vermin, while it can be'readily withdrawn therefrom in such portions as may be desired, the container being shaken while in a partially or wholly inverted position to discharge the Ymaterial therefrom.
lVhile I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that various Vchanges and modifications might be made in the con struction without departing from the principle of the invention,4 and theright is reserved to all such changes and modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown one modification in which the opening 18 in the container is closed by a door 20 of angular shape to conform to the general rectangular outline of the container, this door beingr operated as above set forth by the thrust bar 24. vIn this modification an opening; 5() is formed in the top wall lvl adjacent the door Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
l. A container for packaged foodstuffs comprising a rectangular casing having a discharge opening at the top of o ne wall t-hereof7 the opposite wall of the casing being in the form of a movable plate7 and means for locking` said plate at varying distances from the first wall, Said means comprising a locking bar pivoted between its ends to said plate and adapted to bear outwardly against Vthe inner faces of the side walls of the container at its ends.
2. A container for packaged foodstuffs .comprising a rectangular casing havingl a discharge opening at the top Vof one lwall thereof, the opposite wall of ythe casing being in the form of a movable plate, said plate carrying spikes projecting inwardlyinto said casing and adapted vto project into the package confined between the said" walls whereby a package of less verticalv dimension than the interior of the container may be supported with its top adjacent the said discharge opening.'
3. A container for packaged foodstuffs comprising a. rectangular casinghaving a discharge opening extending along one edge thereof, and a door hinged to the upper edge of said opening, said door having an operating bar hinged thereto'at its front end and extending rearwardly in a groove in the' under face of the top wall of the container and then outwardly through an openingv in said wall, said bar having its rear portion iu the form of pa'rallelconvolutions yand having downturned tip at its vextreme rear end adapted to engage in any one of a series of sockets on the said wall.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. l
