T. M. DAVIES TIRE INFLATING} PUMP Filed April 20, 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 24, 1923..
Eric a.
THOMAS MORRIS DAVIES, OF LLANELLY, WALES.
TIRE-INFLA'IING PUMP.
Application filed April 20, 1922. Serial No. 555,668.
To all 2 700m it may concern.
Dawns v a subject of the King of Great Britam, residing at Llanelly; in the county of Carmarthen, lVales, have invented a new and useful Tire-inflating Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an improvement in or modification of the invention described in the specification of Patent No. 1,377,563 dated May 10th, 1921.
The object of the present invention is to construct a pump which is better adapted forcarrying upon a motor vehicle than that previously described in my aforesaid specitication.
According to one construction ofmy pre-' vious invention, the laterally extending base and the inclined stays connecting the base to the standard were adapted to fold up with the two members as nearly as possible in alignment with the standard and pump barrel. These two parts of the base both folded upwardly and when they were moved downwards into their position for use the outer ends were connected by means of thumb screws.
According to the present invention the two stay rods are pivoted at their upper ends to a bridge piece connecting the two sides of the standard so that they may fold downwards parallel to the standard and at their lower ends they are provided with spring clips which engage with sleeves upon a cross piece connecting the two sides of the standard at the extreme lower end thereof. The pump barrel is pivoted to the said cross piece. In addition to the spring clips the stay rods are provided at their lower ends with laterally projecting pins which are preferably provided with heads. Each side of the base carries a slotted plate, the slot of which is adapted to receive one of the headed pins carried by the stay rods. The base is also provided with two portions of a strap so that when the whole apparatus is folded the base may be retained close to the standard and the strap may be passed around the hand lever of the pump thereby retaining this latter close to the pump barrel.
The upper portion of the standard is preferably provided at each side with a spring clip to receive two portions of the air delivery tube, which is bent towards its outer end so that two parts thereof may on ter the spring clips and the .tube will not project beyond theend of the'standard.
The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings in which F ig. 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus erected for use and Fig. 2 is a plan of the lower part thereof shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the parts folded for transport. Fig. 4 is a front elevation seen in the direction of the arrow 4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the upper part 'of the apparatus showing the air delivery tube retained. by the clips. Fig. 6 is adetail view to an enlarged scale showing a modification. a is the main standard of the pump, which is connected at its lower end by the cross piece a and is provided with a bridge piece a. b is the base pivoted at Z) to the standard a and provided at each side with a slotted plate 0. To each side of thebase Z2 is connected one part of a strap 05 by which the parts may be retained in their folded position, as shown in Fig. 3. e, e are the in clined stay rods pivoted at their upper ends at e to the bridge a These stay rods care provided at their lowerends with laterally extending pins e which are preferably providedwith heads and are adapted to enter a slot 0 in each plate'c. The inclined stay rods 6 are connected together at their lower ends as in my previous invention and'they are provided with spring clips 7 adapted to engage with sleeves a surrounding the cross piece (4 The handle 9 is attached; to one side of the standard a. Two spring clips h. are fixed. to the standard a. to receive two portions of the air delivery tube 2' which is bent into a curve near to the handle 9 as shown in Fig. 5. When it is desired to use the pump the strap 05 is unfastened and the pins 6 are movedalong the under side of the base 6 until they arrive at the wider portionthereof, when they can be passed upwards onto the upper surface of the base 6 and be inserted into the slots 0 of the plates 0. As the pump is rocked on the foot 25 and as downward pressure is always applied to the standard a in the act of pumping the pins 6 automatically remain at the ends of the slots 0 When it is desired to fold the pump for storage the pins 6 can be readily withdrawn from the slotsw and be moved backwards over the upper part of the base I) and passed through the wider portion thereof, after which the stay rods e are moved on their pivots 0 until the spring clips engage the sleeves or distance pieces a mounted on the cross piece a The stay rods e may be slightly cut away at e to enable them to be rocked suiiiciently to enable the pins 6 to pass over the plates 0 and through the wider portions of the base Z). It is obvious that the spring clips f may'engage direct with the cross piece a if the sleeves or distance pieces a be omitted. j is the pump barrel pivoted at its lower end on the cross piece a and it is the hand lever pivoted at its upper end at 70 to the standard a. The hand lever 72 is pivoted at 70- to a casting is fixed to the upper end of the pump rod 70.
Although there is no tendency for the pin e to leave the slot 0 in the act of pumping it may happen that the pump when standing'as shown in Fig. 1 receives a blow in the opposite direction'to the arrow 4, in which case "the pin may slide along the slot 0 and the pump may then topple over. The pin 6 may also leave the slot if the pump is dragged along the ground by the handle 9 or by the hand lever is. In order to prevent the pin 6 leaving the slot 0 this latter may be cut away at the top and bottom thereof at '0 as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the pin 6 will normally rest in the lower part which has been cut away. Should, however,
I the pump be lifted by the handle 9, the pin 6 will then probably rise into the upper part which has been cut away at 0 In Fig. 6 I have also shown the slot 0 as tapered, thus enabling the pin 6 to readilyenter the mouth of the slot but to be a good fit towards the inner end thereof, which f1irther reduces any tendency for the pin 6 to leave the slot 0' Further a certain amount of friction may be applied at the pivotal points 6 to prevent the stay rods 6 moving too-freely. Such friction may be produced by causing the stay rods@ to bear outwards against the inner faces of the bridge piece a hat I claim as my invention is 1. An improved air pump having in combination a standard, a pump barrel pivoted at its lower end to the standard, a hand lever pivoted at its upper end to the standard and connected intermediate of its ends to the pump rod, a base pivoted to the standard,
plates carried by the sides of the base, a slot in each of said plates, a bridge piece carried by the standard, stay rods pivoted to said bridge piece and pins, carried by the lower end of the stay rods, adapted to enter the slotted plates carried by the base, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved air pump having in combination a standard, a pump barrel pivoted at its lower end to the standard, a hand lever pivoted at its upper end to the standard and connected intermediate of its ends to the pump rod, a base pivoted to the standard, plates carried by the sides of the base, a slot in each of said plates, a portion cut away at the top and bottom at the inner end of said slot, a bridge piece carried by the standard, stay rods pivoted to said bridge piece and pins, carried by the lower end of the stay rods, adapted to enter the slotted plates carried by the base, substantially as set forth.
An improved air pump having in combination a standard, a pump barrel pivoted at its lower end to the standard, a hand lever pivoted at its upper end to the standard and connected intermediate of its ends to the pump rod, a base pivoted to the standard, plates carried by the sides of the base, a slot in each of said plates, a bridge piece carried by the standard, a cross piece connecting the lower ends of the standard, sleeves thereon and spring clips carried by the lower ends of the stay rods adapted to engage said sleeves, substantially as set forth.
4. An improved air pump having in combination a standard, a pump barrel pivoted at its lower end to the standard, a hand lever pivoted at its upper end to the standard and connected intermediate of its ends to the pump rod, a base pivoted to the standard, plates carried by the sides of the base, a slot in each of said plates, portions of a strap carried bysaid base and adapted to retain the base in its folded position, a bridge piece carried by the standard, stay rods pivoted to said bridge piece and pins carried by the lower end of the stay rods adapted to enter the slotted plates carried by the base, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have set my hand.
