'To all who-m t may concer/ie' I Be it known that I, `An'rni'm H..Wiir'rw1in, a citizen ,of vthe `United States, residing at Rice Lake, inthe county ofv Barron, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the `following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art lto which it appertains to make and use the j same." l
l This invention relates to new and usefulv improvements in wrenches. j p y One object of the invention isto provide a wrench which is formed from the minimum number of'part's, which parts are simplek iny construction facture. j j j j Another object of the invention is to prov vide a wrench wherein the lever which holds the movable jaw. in adjusted position is so 2arranged that it is adapted to vbey gripped with the shank of the wrench, thereby securing against displacement of the movable jaw, while engaged with the work.
y Other objects and advantageswill beiap-l parent from the ollowingdescription when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing; f
In the drawing-` u Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the-wrench looking toward the open side of the groove.
Fi 'urey 3 is a vertical longitudinal secytiona `view taken centrally through the v14 of the movable jaw 15, the outer end of vsaid bar-.being formedv with al transverse vand cheap. to manuv,
' notch 16, for the reception of the transverse pin 17 disposedV in the outer end of the channel13. 'I his pin limits the outward sliding movement of the' movable jaw 15, as will be understood. On the lower face of the bar 14 there are formed the series of teethv18.
Formed longitudinally in one edge of the handle 'shank 10, and extending vfrom* the end of the channel 13 which lies beneath the stationary jaw 12, to a point-adjacent the otlierend of the shank,is a groove 19, and
pivotedly 'mounted within this groove, directly beneath the stationary jaw 12, is .a
Whenthe lever 20 is disposed within the groove 19, and the movable jaw 15 has been properly adjusted to cooperate with the jaw 12, tofgrip the work, the operators hand will grasp the shank 10 together with the lever 20, thus firmlyr holding the lever within the groove, and maintaining theyteeth of [the lever in proper engagement with the teeth of the jaw 15. To adjustthe jaw Ait is only necessary toswing the lever 20 out of the groovey 19, then slide the jaw 15, to the proper position along the the groove or channel 13, after which the lever' 20v is again swung into the groove 19, to engage its teeth with those of the jaw 15,
The outer free endyoty the lever A20 is formed with a screw-driver ypoint 20.
What is claimed is: Y A wrench comprising a shank having a head on one endy formed with a stationary jaw, said. shank having a longitudinal groove formed vin one of the narrow faces thereof, said groove'beingenlarged at one f end and entering the stationary jaw, a channel formed longitudinallyin the outer tace of the head, Said channel nterceptng the enlarged end of the groove at an angle thereto, a movable jaw sldable n'sad channel7 :1nd a tapered lever movably supported in the groove of the shank. the lower face of vthe lever snugly ttng tbe bottom of the groove, the upper face of the lever being slightly above the edgesrof the groove to be gripped with the Shank to engage the lever with the movable jaw.
In testimony whereof, have affixed my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
