Application filed reti-uar eo, 1922. Se'riaI No. 537,91
Be it known that ED OND J. ToAL, a citi zenof thejUnited apolis, in the county 21 specification.
The presentinvention; is a stationery article and relates particularly to such de-' vices known'as'scratch .pad holders and designed for desk use, in olfices, stores and the like;
The object 5f the invention isthejzproduction of 7 an; inexpensive and siniply' con structed "stationery articlev of the. above stated character, in which rolls of paperare used and which deviceis hlghly useful.
The essential features of the, invention reside in, a pocket formed, preferably, in 'the' rear endofa body member or'base and of such shape and size as tohave a roll of tion of the paper paper rest and be retained therein,the forward, portion of the base providing a smooth tablet or writing surface over which a poris' drawn from the roll.
The-tablet portlonof the device is provided with guides for maintaining in position the ,paper drawn thereover, and other means are provided-for preventing .the roll paper frommovingvout ofsaid pocket while the paperfisbeing drawn from the roll. One of said guides acts as afcutting edge permitting lengths of paper from: the I have been written u'pon, to be scription herein it is intended to cover the form it may embody invention in whatever within the scope thereof.
' In the drawings which disclose the pre ferred embodiment of the invention as at present devised:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the scratch pad stationery device forming the present invention, v 7
States, residing at Minneof Hennepin, State of v -Minnesota, has lnvented a new and useful Writing Tablet, of which the following is Figure 2 is' a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device and illustratingj the-manner in which a 'roll'of paper is re-J ceived' and maintained in position thereon, and how the-paper is threaded throughsaid,
roll overgthe tablet portion'oof the base,
F1gure3'is aperspective view of the rear guide, provided with an ta di flanged.
which acts to maintain'the' roll of paper in [position on the pocket of the base, as the paper 1's being drawn from the roll overthe 7 tablet portion'thereof, and Figure 4E is-a perspective form of guide for the paper. Referring particularly to used on office desks and the like. This base has its upper face inclined from" its rear end towards its frontend, in the manner shownin the drawings, but this is not essential to the invention. y Theupper surface of the base has pro vided thereon at its rear end portion arecess or pocket 2 having, preferably, aroundview of another p the drawings the" invention consists of a body member or base 1, preferably rectangular, and made of -wo0d,'.metal or any suitable material, andfinished in an ornamental manner :to bej ing or concaved bottom wall a and'side walls 5. The pocket 2 is'designed to receive -a roll ofpaper 10 which is adapted to rest and be supported on the concave wall a of the pocket of the base.
The portion of the base 1' lying forwardly of the pocket 2 I provides a smooth tablet surface, .preferablyrearwardly inclined, to
prov de a convenient writing surface sever whichthe stripof paper 5 from'the roll 3 is drawn;
The strip 5 of paper drawn over the tablet 4 from the roll 3 is held in position and guided during its movement by the guides 6 and 7. These guides consist, preferably,
of strips of metal, or other material, eXtending transversely across the end portions, respectively, of thetablet 4 and are spaced over the surface thereof, the end portions of the guides being bent at right angles to their body portions and secured in position on the base with any suitable means, such as, for instance, by the screws 8. The, guide 6, at the front end of the base, has acut-v which has been written upon, may be torn off at convenient and desired lengths for such purposes as may be desired. 1
The guide 7 is positioned adjacent the ting edge 9 whereby a length of paper,
forward edge of the pocket 2 and is, preferably, provided with an upstanding rear- Wardly inclined flange 10, this flange serving as a guard to engage the roll of paper at a point above its axis of rotation and to prevent the roll from jumping out of the pocket due to any unusual pullor jerk upon the strip of paper 5, while being unwound from the roll 3. It will be observed that therollB is not .journaled in' the pocket 2 but merely rests therein. This flange 1O also. serves as a convenient-means for advertisingor for containing such other information asmay be desired. It is to be understood, however, that vin practicing the present invention, the flange 10 may be omitted, but its provisionisregarded as desirable and advantageous.
The memorandum pad of this invention 1s an article of stationary and is adapted for desk use in offices-,fstores and,the like,
and is, therefore, provided with cushion supporting feet 11 of felt, rubber or other suitable material, for preventing scratching or marring of furniture upon which it is placed. I
As can be readily observed from the above, the roll-of paper used in the present invention is, preferably of such width as to occupy the entire pocket Quand is threaded under the guides 7 and ,6, respectively. As the paper is written upon on.the tablet portion 4', the strip 5 is drawn "through the guides unwindingthe r0113, said roll holding its position in the pocket 2 because of its weight and the particular formation of said pocket as wellas the provision of the flange 10. r
'Having thus described my invention and what I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is: I
l. A writing tablet comprising a base member havingits upper surface cut away to form a recess in whicha roll of paper may rest, a tablet portion on the upper surface of said base member adjacent said recess and over which a strip of paper from said roll may be drawn, and 'means for guiding the strip from the roll over said A writing tablet comprising a base having an inclined upper surface, an open faced chamber on said upper surface of the base at its higher" end portion to receive a roll of paper therein and to retain saidroll when a strip is drawn from said roll, stab: let portion provided by said inclined upper surface and between said chamber and-the lower end of said surface, and guide strips extending transversely across said tablet portion at a point adjacent the edge of said chamber and said lower end of said upper surface, said strips being spaced from said surface whereby the paper'of the roll may be threaded under said guides and maintained in p ositi o'n on said tablet portion of thebase.
4. In a writing tablet, a base member il'iaving a surface thereof formed with a depression providing alpocket in which a roll of paper may rest, means for guidlng a strip of paper from the roll over said surface of the base, an upwardly entendingflange -adjacent said pocket to prevent said roll of paper from accidental. removal from said pocket when a strip of paper is drawn from said roll over said surface while the roll rests in said pocket.
In testimony whereof have hereuntoset my hand.
