HOLDER-DISPENSER FOR ROLL SHEET MATERIAL Filed Feb. 28, 1947- INVENTOR.
Patented Get. 12, 1948 HOLDER-DISPENSER FOR ROLL SHEET MATERIAL Gordon L. Hall, Old Lyme, Conn.
Application February 28, 1947, Serial No. 731,585
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for holding and dispensing rolls of sheet material such as wax, or other paper. The main objects of my invention are:
1. To provide a container-dispenser for sheet material in rolls which will be of neat appearance, easy operation and access to the paper contained, which will provide a loose end of material to grasp for unrolling, and from which flexible sheet material will unroll easily, and a sheet of any desired length may be neatly torn.
2. A container for rolled material of such simple design that it can be easily manufactured, and constructed of a minimum number of parts.
My invention consists of the several features hereinafter described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a pictorial View of a holder-dispenser in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a pictorial view of that part of my invention which acts as a cover for the paper, and a deVice for binding the sheet so that the material may be torn off to any desired length, and to which is attached a strip of metal with a serrated edge. The part shown in this figure will hereinafter be referred to as the cover.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the holder taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1.
In detail, my invention comprises a holderdispenser for roll sheet material comprising a body consisting of the following sections which can be seen in Fig. 1: a back 2, a bottom l2, a front I, and ends II, with inward turned flanges l, at their front edges. It further comprises the part shown in Fig. 2, which acts as a cover for rolled sheet material when contained in the body of the device, and at the same time comprises the means, in its action with relation to the body of the holder, for binding the rolled sheet material so that it will not unroll as it is being torn to any desired length, said cover having attached to it a strip of metal 3, with a serrated cutting edge I0, and having a top 4, a front 5, a back 8, and ends 6, and being of such a size as to slide freely in a vertical direction in the body of the holder.
The operation of my device is as follows: A roll of sheet material is placed in the :body of the holder with its free end leading from the bottom toward the back, and is unrolled until the cover, Fig. 2, can be entered into the body of the holder with the unrolled material extending upward from between the back of the body of the holder 2, and the back of the cover 8, Since the cover will move freely in a vertical direction, it will rest on the contained roll. When the contained material is drawn from the holder at an angle as high as, or higher than, its highest position 9,
in Fig. 3, it will unroll freely. When the desired length of material 'has been drawn from the roll, it can be torn off on the edge II], by pulling on the free end in a downward direction similar to the position of the lower dotted line 9, in Fig. 3. The sheet material is prevented from further unrolling when pulled in a downward direction by a binding action resulting from the tiltin of the cover which presses the sheet material between the lower edge of the back of the cover 8, and the back of the body of the holder 2, the upper front edge of the cover, Fig. 2, binding against the inward turned flanges 1. Further binding action on the roll of sheet material is efiected at the same time by the downward pressure of the top of the cover 4, on the top of the roll of sheet material. As the cover will rest of its own weight on the top of the roll at all times, the binding action on the sheet material will continue to operate as the size of the roll is reduced with use. The cover is kept from tilting out of position by reason of an adequate vertical dimension of its back 8, and by reason of the fact that the outside front-toback dimensions of the cover, Fig. 2, are so nearly those of the inside ,of the body of the holder. The length of the strip 3, which has the cutting edge 10, is less than the length of the cover, Fig. 2, and less than the distance between the inner edges of the flanges l, and the contained roll material passes between the flanges 1, when it is drawn over the edge I0.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, a container adapted to hold roll sheet material, a cover freely, slidably and detachably mounted therein so that it will move freely in a, vertical direction, and may be lifted free of the container, and when in place in the container i adapted to rest on a contained roll of sheet material, said cover having down turned sides one of which last is adapted to bind a portion of the sheet against a wall of the container to assist the downward pressure of the cover in preventing its further unrolling when the sheet is being severed, and said cover having a metal strip with a serrated tearing edge attached to its upper front edge.
