COUPLING-RELEASE RIG-ems.
Application filed. m 27, 1921, Serial no. 473,142. Renewed March sfieas.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atthe city of St. Louis,-
State of Missouri, United States of America,
have invented a certain new and useful Coupling-Release Rigging, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled'in' the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this.
specification.
My invention relates to a coupler release rigging of that type in which a single connecting member extends between the operating arm and the coupler locking pin. The object of my invention is to produce a simple and strong device of the class referred to in which the connecting member may be formed from a piece of square or round stock, preferably the former, by bending operations alone and in which the eye end of the op,- erating lever may be formed by drop forging. s
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one formof device made in accordance with my invention together with a portion of the railway car to which the same is applied, Figure 1 is a plan view on a reduced scale, Figure 2 is a plan view of the end of the operating lever and connecting stirrup, Figure 3 is a front view of the parts shown in Figure 2, and Figure 4: is a side view of the parts shown in Figures 2 and 3, the stirrup being shown in engagement with the eye of the coupler locking pin. 7
5 indicates a railway car provided with a coupler 6 having the usual locking pin 7. 8 is a rock shaft suitably secured to the end of the car 5 and provided with a forwardly extending operating lever 9 terminating in the flattened end 10. The end 10 is provided With a central part or member 11 adapted to pass between the arms of the connecting stirrup, as will be'hereinafter set forth. 12 and 13 are front and rear transverse portions, respectively, the ends 'pass through the eye of the coupler locking pin 7 as shown in Figure 4. The upper ends of the arms 16 terminatein curved portions 18 bent at right angles to the body of the stirrup and adapted to engagewith either the front transverse bar 12 or the rear transverse bar l3,preferably the former as shown in Figures 2 and 4' of the drawings. Owing to the form of my stirrup, it can be readily formed by simple bending operations from either round orsquarestock,
I prefer to use the latter for the reason that greater strength can be obtained from'equal amounts of metal by using square stock and,
furthermore, the bending operations are more easily performed on square'than on The double form of eye used round stock. in the end of the operating lever enables the use of a strong construction which can be readily formed by drop forging owing to the comparatively small amount' of material which must be forced laterally. As the side bars 14L serve merely toprevent the spreading of the arms 16 they may be made comparatively thin.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with acoupler locking pin, of an operating lever therefor having a laterally extending integral portion, and a stirrup passing through the eye of the locking pin and provided with a pair of arms having their ends bent in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the stirrup and engaging with the laterally extending integral portion of the operating arm to the class described, the
ing their ends curved in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the stirrup body and in engagementwith the laterally extending integral portion of the operating arm to lift the locking pin. I
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler locking pin of an operating lever therefor, and a stirruppassing through the eye of the locking pin, the ends of said stirrup forming a pair of upwardly extending arms,-said operating lever having a central portion extending be Ll P111 5.
tween the arms of the stirrup, front and rear transverse portions limiting the movement of said arms, and means for preventing the disengagement of the stirrup from the operating lever when the parts are in position on the car.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler locking pm, of an operating arm there-for, a stirrup passing through t-he eye oithe locking pin and havmg a pair of upwardly extended arms, said operating lever having a central portion extending between the arms oi the "stirrup, front and rear transverse portions tor hmiting the movement of said arms, and means i for preventing the disengagement of "the stirrup from the operating lever when the parts are in position on the car, said operating lever being also provided with means for preventing the spreading of the-stirrup 5. In a device 01 the class described, the
combination with a coupler locking; pin, of an operating lever therefor, said lever being provided with a pair of vertical eyes, and a stirrup passing through the eye of the locking pin and provided with a pair of arms, one passing through each eye of the operating lever, and means carried by said arms and engaging with the operating lever to hit the pin.
6. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a coupler locking pin, of
mv hand and ailixed my seal.
