Description

S. H. CAMPBELL.
CONNECTION FOR PIN LIFTERS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. I3. 1919.
4 INVENTOH s. H.CAMPBELL ATTORNEY UNITED STATES STERLING H. CAMPBELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CONNECTION FOR PIN-LIFTERS.
Application filed December 13, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Connection for Pin-Lifters, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a connection for pin lifters and more particularly to a connection which may be readily applied to pin lifters of the type now commonly in use and which will be simple and effective in operation and not liable to get out of order.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a connection made in accordance with my invention together with a part of a railway car to which the same is applied, Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 is an enlar ed side view of some of the parts shown in *ig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Figs. & and 5 are an edge and side viewrespectively showing the modified form of connection.
10 indicates a railway car provided with a draw-bar 11 terminating in a coupler head 12 provided with a pin 13 for locking the knuckle 14. 15 is a rock shaft provided with an arm 16 having a horizontal eye 17. All of these parts areof old and well-known form.
In order to connect the eye of the rock shaft 15 with the locking pin 13, I provide a connection, one form of which is shown in Figs. 1 to 3. This connection consists of a pair of similar parts 18 connected together by a rivet 19 and each terminating in a hook 20 for engagement with one of the eyes. The hooks 20 are formed as shown in dotted lines in F ig. 2 of the drawings and each is provided at a short distance from its end with a slot 21 forming a weakened portion in order to allow the end to be bent as shown in full lines in this figure to permanently secure the connection to the eye. Each of the parts 18 is provided with an overlapping end 22 adapted to strike against the body 18 of the other part when the eyes are sep- Specification of Letters Patent.

arated as shown in Fig. 2 so as to prevent the pivot formed by the rivet 19 from coming into line with the eyes 13 and 17. It will, therefore, be evident that my connection may be readily applied to cars provided with operating rods of the usual type and that it is so constructed that it is not liable to get out of order.
In Figs. at and 5 I have shown a modification of a connection in which one of the parts 18 is passed through an opening in the other and provided with an integral head 28, while the other is provided with a portion 21 extending at right angles to the body and performing the same function as the extensions 22 in the connection above described. The operation of this connection is the same as that first described.
Having fully described my invention,
so connected to each as to have rocking movement relative thereto in two planes substantially at right angles to each other.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler locking pin, of an operating lever therefor, a connection comprising two members hinged together to have relative movement in a lateral plane only and extending between said parts and so connected to each as to have rocking movement relatively thereto in two planes substantially at right angles to each other, and means for limiting the movement of said hinge to prevent the alinement of its pivot with said eyes. a
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler locking pin provided with an eye, of an operating lever therefor also provided with an eye, and a connection comprising two members hinged together to have relative movement in 2. lateral plane only and extending between said parts and engaging with each of said eyes to have both lateral and longitudinal movement relative thereto.
Patented Nov. 9', 1920.

In a device of the class described, the lateral'and longitudinal rocking movement comblnation wlth a coupler looking pln prorelative thereto, and means for hmlting the vided With an eye, of an operating lever movement of said hinge to prevent the aline- 1O therefor also provided with an eye, a connecment of its pivot With said eyes.
