' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMEON K. Dionne- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupler- Rod Extensions, of which the. following is a specification.
The rulings of the Interstate Commerce Commission under the safety appliance law require that all old cars, as well as new shall have certain fixed clearance between the cars when coupled together. It is necessary on old cars in which this clearance is insuiiicient, to either move the draft rigging forward so as to throw the coupler head forward a distance sufficient to give the required clearance, or else apply a coupler which has a lengthened head. In either case this change leaves the length of the uncoupler rod above the head insutficient so that either entirely new rods must be substituted or the old ones removed and lengthened at the forge shop. This is an expensive procedure, and itis the purpose of my invention to provide an inexpensive means for lengthening the rods without removing them from position. Certain embodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coupler construction with my invention applied thereto, the dotted lines indicating the position of the coupler head and-the operating connections for the coupler pin before the lengthened head is applied, and before the extension of the coupler rod is applied as indicated in the full lines, Figs. 2 and 3 are plan and side elevations respectively, on an enlarged scale, of the front end of the un coupler rod, Figs. 4 and 5 are plan and side elevation view respectively of my improved extension, Figs. 6 and 7 are sections respectively of lines VI-VI and VIIVII of Fig. 5, Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of extension member, and Fig. 9 is a view corresponding to that of Fig. 6, but showing the yoke after its edges have been bent over.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 is the coupler head, 2 is the coupler pin; 3 is the uncoupler rod having the end 4; as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, such end'being provided with the usual perforation 5; 6 is the uncoupler extension member; 7 and 8 are ole'vis members attached to the outer end of the extension -sition indicated-in Fig. 11

The extension member 6 is preferably a malleable casting, although other materials might be used, and as indicated in Fig.- 4 is in the form of a yoke, through the two sides of which are the alined perforations 10.
The end 4 of the uncoupler rod being adapted to fit between the sides of the yoke, with the perforation 5 in alinement with the perforations 10, and the parts are held in this relative position by means of the securing pin 11 (Fig. 1). The front end of the extension member is provided with a perforation 12 for receiving a pin 13 (Fig. 1), while the two sides of the yoke at the rear end of the extension member are connected together by means of the bridge portion 13 which is adapted to lie beneath the,

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. In coupling apparatus the combination with a coupler head and pin therefor and an uncoupler rod above the head having a perforated end; of .an extension member perforated intermediate its ends and em bracing the uncoupler rod; a securing pin extending through the perforations in the said rod and said member, and a connection a yoke fitting over the end of the uncoupler rod; a securing pin extending through the yoke and the perforation in the uncoupler;
head; a connection between the two sides of the yoke and lying beneath the uncoupler rod; and a connection between the outer end bf the yoke and the uncoupler pin.
8. In combination; a coupler head; a cou- -pler pin therein; an uncoupler rod above the head having a perforation in its end; an extension member having a portion at one end embracing the uncoupler rod so that upward movement thereof with respect to the con lerrod is revented' a securin in extending through the extension memberand the said perforation in the uncoupler rod; and a connection between the outer end of the member and the coupler pin.
4. In combination; a coupler head; a conpler pin therein; an uncoupler rod above the head having a perforation in its end; an extension member having a portion adjacent .one end extending under the uncoupler rod;
a securing pin extending through the extension member and the said perforation in the uncoupler rod; and a connection between the outer end of the member and the coupler pin.
5. An extension member for an uncoupler rod comprising a yoke'hav-ing perforations in the opposing sides to receive a securing pinand having adjacent one end means for connection with the coupler pin; and a connecting portion between the two sides of the yoke adjacent the other end thereof adapted to lie beneath the uncoupler rod.
6. An extension member for an uneoupler rod comprising a yoke having perforations in the opposing sides to receive a securing pin and having adjacent one end means for connection with the coupler pin; and a connecting portion between the two sides of the yoke adjacent the other end thereof adapted to lie beneath the uncoupler rod, the sides of the yoke adjacent such connecting portion being of such a height that their upper edges project above the uncoupler rod and being constructed so as to be bent over the top of the coupler rod.
