IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICAT-ING DEVICES FOR VEHICLE-AXLEIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,23] dated December 2, 1873; application filed A April 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, CHEIsToPHEE C. PAR- KER, residing in Kiddville, in' the county of Sullivan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Wagon-Axles, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lubricators for wagonaxles; and it consists of an oil-vessel, the discharge or supply end of which is made tapering or conically-shaped, and tted with a valve or stopper supplied with a stem or rod passing up through an orifice in the cover, and provided with au adjustable head or nut having a bale or handle. The said cover, which is furnished also with a bale, is held down in place through the assistance of a spring-catch,
while the end of the oil or lubricating vessel is constructed with a screw for fastening that end thereof into themetallic thimble which receives the axle.
In the annexed drawing', Figure l represents a view, in elevation, of my improved lubricator, and a transverse vertical section of the hub of a wheel, showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the former, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the same.
In the several iigures corresponding parts are designated by similar letters.
A refers to a cylindrical or other suitablyshaped vessel for holding the oil or other lubricating. substance, to the lower end of which vessel is supplied a screw-threaded neck, al, which enters a threaded opening made in the thimble al of the hub a2 for ,the purpose of fastening that end in place, the oil or grease being supplied or fed to the axle A through the said neck. Within the lower part of the vessel A is secured, in 'any known way, a funnel-shaped or tapering vessel, communicating with thel neck a, and constituting a part of the vessel just named. To this funnel-shaped vessel is iitted a valve or stopper, B, which` acts as a cut-011l to the flowing oil, entering the axlechamber when it is pushed downward, but when elevated or lifted out of the said funnel it allows the oil to tlow to the axle. A stem or rod, b, attached to, and for the purpose of lifting and lowering, the said valve, extends up through the cover C, and is supplied with an adjustable head or nut, c, havingI a bale, c1. lhe object of this arrangement is to ena-ble the valve B to be grasped, through the said bale c, and raised and lowered, or opened and sluit, when desired, without removing the cover C, and, further, to permit of the latter being removed wit-hout disturbing the valve or cut-ofi' B, as it will be plainly seen that, by unscrewing the adjustable head c, the said cover will be disconnected from the stem b of the valve, an d thus leave the said stem unaffected by the removal of the cover. A diaphragm or disk, b', is attached to the stem b at such a point as that the said valve B will be prevented from being lifted out of its seat further than to allow the oil to flow out ofthe vessel at the desired rate or speed. rlhe cover or cap C is supplied with vents c'2 c2 and the bale c3 for lifting it from its place. The vessel A is inserted or set into the hub so as that its upper end shall rest below the surface of the latter, and then protected from the dust and mud by a lid or cover hinged over the opening having the said vessel. A spring-catch, I), fastened to the side of the vessel A, overhangs the cap or cover C., and assists in holding it down upon the vessel A. Lugs E E are fastened to the opposite sides of the vessel for the reception of suitable f fastenings for attaching the upper end there of to the hub.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the vessel A, having the conically-shaped valve-seat, of the valve or cut-otfB, the stem ot' which is supplied with a diaphragm, b', and a handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the yvessel A, cap or cover C c3, valve B b, having the adjustable head c and bale c', and the diaphragm b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
