, HANDLE FOR TRAVELING BAGS.
Application filed March 14, 1922. Serial No. 543,575.
. Gladstone bags and more particularly to the type comprising a grip member covered with leather, or other sheathing material.
The invention comprises a wire reinforce ment, a rubber body member surrounding the wire, a leather sheathing, a ferrule receiving the ends of the handle and secured by suitable threads to the wire, the ferrule being pivoted to a base plate riveted to the frame of the bag and having a. depending hook adapted to be received in a slot in the opposed frame for holdingthe two frames in contacting relation.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a structure wherein the wire reinforcement is held rigid with the ferrule, the threaded relationship preventing a tendency to tear loose. There is no relative movability between the two parts and consequently there is no tendency to tear away the wire from the rubber body, In addition to this feature of rigidity, the structure has the obvious advantage of cushioning the handle upon the hand, a desirable stiffness thereof being maintained.
An important object of the invention is accomplished by the depending hook structure, which facilitates a ready afiixation of one frame member to another and a ready detachment of the parts.
The mere manual movement of the frame between the end of the hook and the other frame member suiiices for the securing of the parts. VVhen the frame members are in proper closed position, they are secure with respect to each other, a locking relationship being established, the cooperation of the hook with the rigid portions of the frames providing a strong structure capable of sustaining great weight without tendency to tear loose.
An advantage is the concealing of the hook.
Vith the above and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description pro ceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as'hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed inventionmay be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a cross section thereof on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
tion so the frame members may be provided tomary.
From base plates 13, 13' apertured lugs 17, 17' extend upwardly and are received be tween ears 18 on the one side and 19 on the other side and pivoted thereto by pivots 25, 25. These ears are integral with ferrule 20,
with other suitable locking devices, as is cus- 20 into .which wire reinforcement 21 is movability, would result in a tendency for the parts to tear away, thus tending to render the handle useless.
The entire structure, therefore, of wire reinforcement, ferrule, and depending hook is especially strong and adapted to stand severe usage.
I claim:
1. The combination of a metallic frame member, a base member, a depending hook extending downwardly thrusaid metallic frame member, a second metallic member, said second fran'ie member having a slot therein for the reception of said depending hook, said dependinghook being adapted to hold said frame members in close contactual relationship, a handle, and means pivotally connecting said handle to said base member.
2. The combination of a metallic frame member, a cover therefor, a base member, a depending hook extending downwardly through said cover and said metallic frame member, a second metallic frame member,a cover therefor, said frame member and cover having a slot therein for the reception of said depending hook, said depending hook being adapted to hold said frame members in close contactual relationship, a lug on said base plate, and a handle pivotally secured to said lug. M
8. The combination of a wire reinforcement, an elastic body, a sheathing therefor, a ferrule receiving said reinforcement, said body, and said sheathing and engaged in threaded relationship with said reinforcement, a pair of ears on said ferrule, a base plate, a lug thereon, a pivot directed through said lug and said ears, a hook depending from said base plate, a metallic frame memher, a cover therefor, means securing said frame member to said base plate, said hook extending through said frame member and said cover, a second metallic frame member, and a second cover therefor, said second metallic frame member having a slot therein for the reception of said hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Mayville, in the county of Dodge and State of Visconsin.
ARTHUR KAHLOW.
