NETE@ STATES EMILE REIZENSTEIN, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PRESSING DEVICE.
Application led January 19, 1922.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE. RErzENsrE-IN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pressing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pressing devices of the type having pressing members adapted to press articles therebetween and more particularly to devices for pressing trouser legs in which the pressing members are held together with clamps.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character referred to which is light and compact and at the same time sufficiently rigid to produce a substantially uniform pressure along a relatively long fold or crease which requires a comparative small number of clamps to hold the pressing members together, which will press both the front and rear creases of one or both legs of a pair of trousers at the same time, which willeXert adequate pressure on both creases irrespective of the relatively thick seam portions on the sides of the legs, which can be adjusted to trousers or other articles of diierent sizes, which can be fold- A ed into compact form, which is both adjustable and foldable as aforesaid, and which is generally superior to prior devices of the type referred to.
A pressing device made according to the present invention may have any of the following characteristics. One of the pressing members, which is preferably relatively narrow and located near the edge of the other member, may be adjustable toward and from the edge of the other members to accommodate articles in different positions. For eX- ample, in a device having one member somewhat wider than a flattened trouser leg and having a narrow pressing member extending along each edge of said member simultaneously to press both the front and the rear creases of the leg, one or both of the narrow members may be adjusted inwardly and outwardly to accommodate trousers of di'erent sizes or to accommodate dierent lengths of a tapered trouser leg. Io hold the presser members together in various positions of adjustment relatively to each other clamps adapted to engage the members in each of the positions may be provided.
Serial No. 530,372.
These clips are preferably in the form of U-shaped clips extending over the edges of the presser members. The clips may directly engage the backs of the members but the narrow members are preferably provided with clip bearings (which may be in the form of stiffening ridges hereinafter referred to) and the faces of the clips which engage the bearings are preferably serrated or roughened to hold the parts in position. In order to minimize the number of clamps and at the same time secure approximately uniform pressure throughout the lengths of the presser members stiieners may be provided, the stifeners preferably being in the form of ridges extending along the backs of the narrow presser members. These stiffeners are preferably in the form of sheet metal strips having a corrugation or ridge extending longitudinally thereof and having integral tabs extending into or through the narrow presser members to secure the parts together. The stiffeners should be laterally adjustable, especially when serving as bearings for the clamps, so that they may be positioned approximately over the creases of the article to be pressed, thereby to stilfen the presser'members along the lines of the creases and to afford maximum pressure along such lines, and when fast to the adjustable presser members the parts are of course adjustable together.
'Ihe pressing members may be connected together so that they do not fall apart when unclamped in which case the connection is prefera ly adjustable to permit the afore said adjustment. This may be accomplished by hinging means in the form of a flexible connection of fabric or other suitable material having suicient slack to permit the adjustment. y
In order to illustrate the nature of the invention certain concrete embodiments should be shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. l is a plan View of a device for press ing trouser legs;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the presser members;
Fig. a is a side view of a modied trouser presser device;
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 6 of Fig. 4 showing one position of adjustment;
Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 5 6 of trousers may be pressed at a` time.
Fig. 4 showing another position of adjustment;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the preferred form of clamping clip; and
Fig. 8 is a side view of a further modiiication of presser member.
In the device shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, one ot the presser members l is somewhat wider than the trouser legs and is taperedto correspond with the taper oi" the trousers. The other presser members 2 are in thet'orm ot. relatively narrow strips extending along the opposite edges ot the member l. Each oi the presser members has a stiffeneror 3 extending along the back thereof, the stitener preferably being formed ot Sheet metal and h'aving a. corrugation or ridge t or 4.- extending longitudinally thereot and having its corners 5 extending through the presser member 2 and bent over as shown at G in Fig. 3. By using thin sheet metal the protuberance produced` by the turned end 6 is very. shallow and it desired themember 2niay be recessed to receive this folded corner so that itsv outward vtace is flush with the lower side ot the presser member 2.
The clamps 7 for holding the presser members together are lJ-shaped and adapted to lit over the edges ol the presser members as shown in Fig. 2. rFliese clamps may be formed ot various materials but they are preferably formed of some metal such as steel which possesses some elasticity. rThe leg 8 of each clamp is preferably flat while the other leg- 9 is preferably shaped as shown in Fig. 7 with an, elongate portion 10 substantially parallel` to the opposite leg 8. Each face of the clip which engages a metallic ridge is preferably serrated or roughened as indicated at 10 in Fig. 7.
By making the lower member l, which' extends the full width ot the device, suiiiciently stiff in` itself, the lower stitleners Li may be omitted, in which case the clamps are formed and applied as shown in'Figs. 5 and 6.
In using the device the trousers are laid on the board 1 with their front and rear creases near the opposite edges ot the board respectively, the presser members 2 are then placed ony the creases and the clamps'? are then slipped over the edges ot the members to press them together. Somewhat better results may be obtained by dampening the folds ot the trousers before they are placed in the vise. Either one or both legs of the If the creases of the trousers extend almost to the edges of the board l the members 2 may be placediwith their outer edges over the edges of the board as shown in Fig. l and also in Fig. 2. It the trousers are some narrower the members 2 may be shifted inwardly until the ridges 4f` areA approximately over 'the creases, the clips 7 being adapted to engage the ridges t in various positions ot adJustment.
The device shown in Fig. 4 1s similar to that shown in Fig. l except 1n that the board l is divided transversely at 9 and the two parts are hinged together by means of a ilexible strip of material l0 secured to the bottoml ot the board on each side oi' the diriding line 9. The device'shown in Fig. 4 also differs 'liromtliat shown in F ig. l in that the p esser members 2. are divided into parte corresponding to the parts of the board l and each part is connected to the corresponding part ot the board l by means ot iicxibie connections ll,`otl bre, leather or4 the l'le. connections having suiiicient slack between the parts to permit the aforesaid lateral adjustment` of the members 2 as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
The device shown in Figs. 4, and 6 may be folded into compact form. along the line 9, the presser member 2 remaining attached to the board l when folded.
instead ci having the membersQ/y connected to the board l as in Fig. t, the two parts otl each member may be connected together as shown in Fig. 8, where the parts 2l correspond to the parts 2 of.; Fig. 4f and are ity ot' pressing members adapted to press;
articles therebetween, one ot" the members being relatively narrow and beingflocated near the edge oi the other member, said; narrow menibn' being adjustable toward and from said edge to accommodate articles in different positions. and means tor clamping the two members together in various positions o't adjustment of the narrow member'.
2. A pressing device comprising a. plurality ot pressing members adapted to press articles tlierebetwet-io. a stiffener extending along the outside ot one oi said'members, and means tor pressing said members together, said means engaging saidf st itfener.
