Description

J. ROWE.
No. 14,519. Patented March 25, 1856.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ROWE, OF TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA.
PORTABLE FIELD-FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,519, dated March 25, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Rows, of Tampa Bay, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hurdle-Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the fence. Fig. 2 is a plan of same. 1 I
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in securing the upright bat-tens of the fence panels, on opposite faces of the string pieces, at the two extremities thereof, so that in mak ing the lock the said battens shall at each angle be on the same side of the fence, to admit of the overlapping of the strings; also, in the method of adjusting the panels to the surface of the ground by the boring of several holes in two of the laps of each angle, so that the connecting pins may enter such holes as will allow the fence to follow the curvature of the ground, and further the invention consists in constructing the laps of the panels so that each shall, when the fence is in position, rest against a shoulder of the other string piece. The details of construction are as follows.
In the drawing a a are the string pieces of the panel and b b the battens, secured on opposite sides of the strings. The strings are made to overlap and interlock as shown in the drawing, and are connected together by pins 0 passed through holes cl, one of the panels at each angle being provided at each lap with a series of holes for the insertion of the pins so that the panels may conform to the surface of the ground. Each lapping portion rests against a' shoulder of the string piece of the other panel, to favor strength, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim- The construction of field fence panels with shouldered laps, perforated as described and with upright battens on opposite sides of the string pieces; operating as, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ROWE.
