Description
B., F. LYON.
Fence. I No. 15,188. Patented June 24, I856.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. LYON, OF PLEASANTVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE FIELD-FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,188, dated June 24, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANK- LIN LYON, of Pleasantville, in the county of Venango, State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed a new and useful Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, represents my portable fence with all its parts adjusted. A, B, C, D, are the rails through which pickets pass in a perpendicular direction or otherwise. E, F, G, are posts which may be round or square; in these posts as shown at 1, 2, 3, 4c, 5, 6, are dovetail mortises constructed as shown at P, P, where S represents the end of a post but in two parts through the mortises.
Fig. 3 represents a post out in two laterally through the mortises, showing as far as possible their inside construction. The upper part of the mortises are cut in at an angle of about 45 degrees as shown at O, 0, so that to enter the rails the out end must be elevated; the upper part of the mortises above the mark a is cut square except the top which is cut at the angle described from u to o, is cut dovetailing, as represented at P, P.
Fig. 2 represents my rail. The ends are ends and shoulders as shown at H, I, for the purpose of giving the fence flexibility, as by cutting the shoulders round the fence may be run up a hill as well as on level ground which could not be done if the shoulders were square.
Every 4 or 5 lengths of the fence I cut the mortises as described and in addition I cut the upper part above the line u out as shown at 7 and 8 on the post 9. By this arrangement and construction a panel of fence can be taken out and put in very easily.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. The construction of the mortice in my fence posts in the manner described.
2. I claim the construction of my rails in the manner described with the shoulders and ends of the dove-tail round; and also with the dovetails H and I made reverse as shown; and on the opposite sides of the rails.
3. I do not claim the dovetail mortises and rails alone, but the dovetail mortises with the upper part out square and the lower part dovetailing in the manner described or by any other substantially the same and which will producethe same re sult.
BENJAMIN F. LYON. Witnesses:
A. B. RICHMOND. JAMES H, LEWIS.
