PORTABLE FENCE.

Specication of Letters Patent No. 21,315, dated August 31, 1858.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT I. BROWN, of Perry, in the county of Venango, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a zig-zag or worm fence without posts; Fig. 2 a plan view of Fig. 1.

The letters of reference indicate the same parts in the diiferent figures.

The following is a description of the construction and arrangement of parts of my improved portable fence.

The rails A, of the worm fence shown in Fig. 1 each have at one end a dove-tail tenon (a), and at the other a dove-tail gain (b) out about half through the rail, corresponding in size and form with the tenon a, and beveled at an angle that will give the desired ground plan to the fence, the gain of each alternate rail being inclined in the opposite direction. A panel is composed of two of these rails with the tenons and gains laid in the same direction horizontally and connected by vertical pickets secured in any convenient manner at suitable distances.

One panel thus constructed being set up, the tenons of another panel which has its gains beveled in the opposite direction to the first are driven into the gains thereof, and so on continuously, forming a fence, the panels of which are firmly secured together without nails or pins and cannot be removed without commencing at one end of the line of fence. This drawing also shows my mode of uniting the top and bottom rails by pickets having right hand screws cut on one end, and left hand screws on the other screwed into corresponding female screws in the rails at suitable distances; this plan in connection with the tenons and gains on the rails before described, prevents any picket from being removed without taking the fence to pieces.

Having thus fully described my improvements what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

1. Constructing a portable fence without posts by locking the panels together by means of dovetail tenons and gains in the manner herein specified.

2. Also in combination with the above the use of right and left hand screws in the mznner and for the purpose herein specifie In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
