Description
iran STATES PA JOHN CARD, or eA'rNsvILLE; NEW YORK. i
FENCE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CARD, of Grainsville, in the county of W'yoming and State of New York, have invented a new and useful F ence; and I dol hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof. i
The said fence consists of posts and rails. The posts' may be made of the size and length best adapted to the character of the fence designed. For ordinary farm fence the posts may be made of planlr, six inches wide and two inches thick, and about six feet long, bored at convenient distances, so as to receive the rails,-the holes may be of any desirable size.` A hole from three to four inches in diameter is recommended afford a suflicient base for the fence.
for ordinary use. The posts are used in pairs as seen in the accompanying drawing, A, A, B, B, and C, C, representing` three pairs of posts. The pairs may be united or coupled by apin near the top, or in any other convenient manner. Ordinarily a pin about fifteen inches below the top of the post will be suflicient. It is recommended that the end of the rails, entering the posts, and the pin connecting the posts be left square, so as to avoid decay, as shown in the drawing. i
The posts are designed to be placed upon the surface of the ground, and if desired, protected by stone, or in any other way, from rot. y i
I), in the drawing represents the connecting pins, and E the ends of rails in the posts. The posts in each pair may incline toward each other at any desirable angle, to It will ordinarily be found sufficient to place their feet from three to four feet apart. The posts may be made of sawed or split lumber or material, and ofg'eater or less width or thickness.
The rails may be of any kind of wood, sawed or split to a desirable size, and of any convenient length. Ordinarily `from ten to twelve feet in length will be found convenient, and, if sawed, from three to four inches square. If split rails are 'used the heaviest should be put nearest the bottom.
F, F, &c. represent the rails in the drawing. The number of rails in each section,
and their size, and distances apart, will be governed by the character and use of the fence to be built. The drawing shows two sections of the fence, and their inclination toward each other. In constructing the fence it will be well to insert the top rail of each section into the posts into which the other rails of that section are not inserted in such case let such top rail be in nearly the same` perpendicular line `of the next rail below it as shown in the drawing.
The lower part of each pair of posts may `be connected, and the space between them filled by nailing boards upon the sides of posts of each pair, as shown by the letters H, H, &c. in the drawing, or in any' other convenient manner.
The first section erected should be well braced, by two braces fastened to the foot and top of the two posts of such section and crossing it diagonally. The braces crossing each other in the center should, at that point be pinned to the rail. At proper distances, according to the pitch of the ground, other sections should be braced in the same, or any other convenient manner. Under all circumstances the pairs of posts, saving their inclination to each other as above mentioned) should stand perpendicularly.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- .1. The construction of the posts in pairs, and their combination with the rails in such a manner, as to render the fence strong` and firm, by balancing the weight of the fence, by its construction as herein above described, upon. each side, equally, of the center of each pair of the posts, and securing at the same time the advantages of a straight fence, and of posts standing upon `the surface, and secured from decay. y
2. I do not claim as my invention the con struction of the posts, as herein above described, either singly or in pairs, but the combination of the advantages above mentioned as substantially described in this specification and as above claimed by me.
JOHN onnnfl
