SCAFFOLD FOR SHINGLING ROOFS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,390, dated July 22, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. IV. Romer-ER, of Abingdon, in the county of Tashington and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Scaffold to be Used in Shingling Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of my improvement applied to the roof of a building. Fig. 2 is a detached plan or topview of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in having a platform hinged to small sleepers or string pieces which have segment braces attached to their outer ends, said braces passing` through the ends of bars on which the platform rests, so that the platform may always be adjusted in a horizontal position, whatever the pitch or inclination of the roof may be.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a platform constructed of boards or planks of any suitable length and width. This platform has bars (a) attached to its under side, and one end of these bars are hinged to sleepers or string pieces which have pins or spurs o) in their under sides. The outer ends of the sleepers or string pieces have segment braces B, attached to them, one to each, and these braces pass through mortises in the outer ends of the bars (a). Holes (d), are made through the braces in which pins are placed to support the platform. The pins or spurs c), penetrate into the roof C, shown in red, Fig. l, and secure the scaffold to the roof, the sleepers or string pieces, of course, being inclined or having the same pitch as the roof, as they rest upon it. The platform A, it will be seen, may be raised in a horizontal position whatever the pitch or inclination of the roof may be, the pins in the holes (d) sustaining the platform.
The above implement is extremely simple, may be adjusted to roofs and moved thereon with the greatest facility as the work of shingling progresses, and the shingles are not liable to be split by nails or are not injured in any way, as is now the case, in using the temporary scaffolding.
My improved scaffold may be made of any length as the nature of the work requires, and is intended for a permanent implement.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Constructing the scaffold, as shown, viz: having' the platform A, hinged to the sleepers or string pieces (L), and having segment braces B, attached to the sleepers or string pieces, the braces having holes (d), made through them and passing through the bars (a), of the platform, whereby the platform, by means of pins passing through the holes (d), in the braces, may always be adjusted in a horizontal position whatever the pitch or inclination of the roof may be.
