To all whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenolden, in the county of Delaware and' scribed and claimed a fuel oi-l burner pro-rV vided with means' for introducing the oil and steam or other atomizing agent into the burner and having provision for efficient an atomization of the oil so as to loreakl,l the same up into substantially a gaseous state.
Said burner is also provided with an arrangement of passages or nozzles having provision for producing a secondary atomization effect, the construction being such that if the oil in. its transit through the burner after the first atomization should, return from a gaseous to a more or less liquid state, the means for producing the seconda atomization will efficiently atomize the oily and prevent rojecting of globules or li uid articles ofjoil into the furnace.

ln some instances it may be desirable to provide a burner with secondary atomization means which will have the advantages of the secondary atomization means disclosed in said ap lication, but located within the burner. ln the presentinstance of the invention, this secondary atomizing means is located closely adjacent to the tip or delivery end of the burner, but the position thereof with respect to the tip or delivery end may be varied provided that the atomized oil on issuing from the secondary atomizing means does not travel a sufficient distance in the burner to allow return thereof from a gaseous to a more or less liquid state.
The delivery end of the burner projects mto the furnace and is subjected to the high temperature thereof, which may tend to cause the oil to carbonize on parts of the means for producing the secondary atomization, and therefore, it may be desirable to provide a delivery end or tip for the burner which will tend to protect the secpndary atomizing device from such carbonization effect.
Also, for different conditions it may be desirable to employ delivery ends or tips for the burner of varying character. For example, in some instances it is desirable to provide a tip which shall have a single delivery orifice, a-nd in other instances it may be desirable to provide a tip which shall have a plurality of orifices, and it may be desired to vary the shape of the orifice or orifices. Another purpose of the invention, therefore, is to provide a delivery end or tip for the burner which may be located beyond the secondary atomizing device, and may be detachably secured to the burner so as to admit ready r moval thereof and substitution of others therefor.
There are further advantages in such a delivery end or tip, since it may serve to produce a. still further atomization of the oil after delivery thereof from the seconda1 atomizing means.
Vith the aforesaid and other purposes in view, the character of the invention will be understood by reference to the following description of one good form thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, the burner shown therein as onegood form of the invention comprises a body or gun 1 conveniently of tubular form and of substantial length.
Any suitable means may be provided for introducing the oil and steam or other atomveniently in 'the form of a. central steam conducting passage 5 vand an 'annular oil conducting passage 7 respectively receiving steam and oil from pipes 9 and 11 provided 'with suitable-valves 13 and 15. .These passa es may have delivery nozzles 17 and'19 relgatively adjustable and contracted so as'to increase the velocity of-the streams of steam and oil'issuing there-from. The construction is suchthat the oil may lie-delivered in an annula-r'stream transversely to the central stream of oil, so that the steamvill impinge against the annular stream offoil focused `and directed transversely thereof, thereby eiiiciently to atomize or break up the oil.
This charging device may be substantially the same as that disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 367,629, filed March 22, 1920, and also disclosed in the application first referred to herein.
The mixture ofatomized oil and steam issuing froml the charging device will pass through the gun 1 toward the delivery end thereof. As stated, one of the purposes of the invention is to provide means Within the burner for eiciently producing secondary atomization of the oil so as to break up and thoroughly atomize any globules or particles of oil which may have formed in the course of the transit of the mixture through the burner. This secondary atomizing means, in the present instance of the invention, comprises a neck 21 having a iiange 23 at the rear end thereof-threaded to the front end of the gun 1. `Adjustably connected to said neck conveniently by threaded attachment is a nozzle 25 contracted to present a delivery .mouth 27.
Mounted within the neck 21 is a neck 29 conveniently connected thereto by a .web 31 having a plurality of openings or ports 33 therein for allowing the oil and steam mixture to pass` from the gun into the annular passage 35 between the necks 21 and '29. Adjustably connected to the neck 29 conveniently by threaded attachment is a nozzle 37 contracted .to present a delivery mouth 39 Vadjacent the delivery mouth 27 of the outer nozzle.
The -construction is such that the oil and steam mixture may pass from the gun both into the annular passage 35 andthe central passage 41. The construction and shape of the contracted nozzles 25 and 37 is such that i the annular stream passing through the passage 35 is concentrated against and caused to project transversely with respect to the stream issuing from the central passage 41, and-'the velocity of said streams is materially increased. As a result, a secondary atomization of the oil is produced which breaks up the globules or particles of oil into a substan* tially gaseous state. A
This secondary atomizing means may be suitably located within the burner, and the distance therefrom from the delivery'end of the burner may be varied, but preferably the secondary atomizing means is located closely adjacent to the tip or delivery end of' the burner.
Asstated, one of the purposes of the invention is to providea delivery end or ltip for the burner located beyond the secondary atomizing means. In theI present instance, this delivery end or ti K is formed of thin sheet metal 43 preferably curved and provided With a flange or margin 45 confined between the end'of the outer nozzle 25 and a flange of a collar 47 which may be threaded to the outer nozzle 25. This tip may be provided with an appropriate orifice, inthe present instance, in the form of an elongated slit 49. v 4 The construction is such that the oil and steam mixture issuing from the secondary atomizing means will impinge against and be deflected by the inner curved surface of the tip to the slit orifice 49, and thereby cause further atomization of the oil, so that on delivery of the mixture from the burner, the oil will be in a' desirable gaseous state for eiiicient combustion e-i'ect. When it is desired to substitute a new or different tip for the't'p 43, it is merely necessary to unscrew the collar 47 to liberate the tip. 43 and then place the nevvtip inthe collar and screw the latter back onto the outer nozzle 25 so as to confine its flange between the collar and the nozzle.
To facilitate application of the neck 21 to the gun, the iange 23 may have slabbed oii" faces 23a adapted to receive a wrench. To facilitate relative adjstment of the outer and inner nozzles 25 and 37, they may be respectively Vprovided With a series of ribs -25a and 378L extending longitudinally thereof. To facilitate application to and removal of the collar 47 from the nozzle l25, said collar ,may have a series of ribs' 47` extending longitudinally thereof. A In assembling the parts, the neck 21 may be screwed` onto the gun, then the inner nozzle 37 may be screwed onto the inner neck 29, and then the outer nozzle 25 may be screwed onto the neck 21. The tip 43 may be applied to the outer nozzle as described.
It will be noted that in theoperation of the burner described, the parts of the atomizing devices are fixed, and that there are no valves or movable parts which are liable to get out of order. VAs a result, the construction is such that it can be relied upon continuously to `produce uniform atomization and eiicient delivery of the oil.

What is claimed is 1. A burner comprising, in combination. a bod having a delivery tip provided With an ori ce, means for conducting the oil and atomizing Huid to the body and for atomizing the oil as it is delivered to the body, and a secondary atomizing means located within the bodylbetween the first atomizing means and said tip and comprising a pair of adjustable nozzles one Within the other.
2. A burner, comprising, in combination, a body having a delivery tip 'provided with an orifice, means for atomizing oil, an orifice,
and means located in the burner adjacent said tip for producing secondary atomization of the oil, and comprising passages for conducting streams of atomized oil with provision for concentrating one stream of atomized oil against the other to promote further atomization of the oil prior to its discharge from said tip.
3. A burner, comprising, in combination, means for introducing oil and atomizing fiuid into the burner with provision for atomizing the oil,v means located within the burner for producing secondary atomizing of the oil and comprising outer and inner nozzles eachconstructed and arranged to receive the atomized oil and to discharge it in the form of im inging streams to increase atomization of t e oil, and a removable orifice tip for delivering from the burner the mixture delivered from the secondary atomizing means.
4f. A burner, comprising, in combination, a body, a charging device for introducing oil and atomizing fluid into the burner with provision for atomizing the oil, a secondary atomizing means located Within the burner remotely from said charging device and comprising a pair of nozzles, one Within the other, and having closely adjacent mouths for concentrating streams issuing from said nozzles against one another to promote atomization of the oil, and a. thin metal orifice tip for delivering :from the burner the atomized mixture issuing from the secondary charging means.
