IMPROVEMENT IN FURNACE-DOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [45.150, dated December 2, 1873; application tiled July 1s, 1873.
To alt whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, JOHN M. CLARK, of
Louisville, in the county of J eii'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace- Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings making a part of this application.
My invent-ion relates to furnace-doors; and has for its objects to render them more durable by providing for the ready repair of that portion of the door which is subjected to the greatest wear, without in any mannerdestroying the usefulness of the other portion; and to these ends my invention consists in so constructing the lower corners as to adapt them to the reception of brackets or false corners, which are secured in position by suitable bolts or otherwise, and which may, when they become worn, be readily replaced by others.
Previous to my invention the doors for furnaces have been so formed that the abrasion or wearing away of the corners. rendered the whole or a large portion ot' the door of no further use, and it had to be discarded and substituted by an entirely new door. This is very expensive, as the doors are usually lined with brick or other masonry. To enable those skilled to more fully appreciate the construction and advantages of my improved door, I will proceed to describe the sane, referring` by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a front View; Fig. 2, a vertical section at the line w x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a transverse section at the line y y of Fig. 1.

A represents the front plate with its edges returned, forming, as it were, a box. The front plate is cut away, or so cast as to receive the bit7 B, which is flanged over the edges of the cutaway portion. The side and bottom edges C are 4also cut away at the lower corners and corner-angles D substituted, which are anged over the front plate A, and rmly secured thereto bybolts E and nuts F, or in any other suitable manner. The fiange on the corner-pieces is of the same thickness of and extends up to the ange ot' the bit B. The interior or back of the plate A is lled with suitable brick-work or other masonry, care only being taken to leave access to the bolts E.
It will thus be seen that when any portion of the corner pieces or angles D become worn the said corners may be entirely removed by withdrawing the bolts D, and replaced by other corner-pieces of the exact pattern, and without disturbing any other part ofthe door, thus saving largely in the cost of repair and loss of time consequent upon the necessity of repair.
Ot' course I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction, as they may be varied to considerable extent without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described the construction and advantages of my improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A furnace-door provided with false or removable corners, substa-ntially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The corner-pieces D, constructed as described, in combination with the door of a furnace, substantially as' and for the purpose described.
