Description

I. ZIEGLER.
FIRE-POT LINING.
No.179,249. Patented June 27,1876.
1 nu run 1, MI I I I m k iffi/tnepjs 3 Ina/022201:
UNITED STATES JOHN ZIEGLER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO RUFUS J. KING, OF SAME PATENT OFFICE.
PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-POT LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179.249, dated J une 27, 1876; application filed May 20, 1876.
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ZIEGLER, of Day ton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Pot Lining; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates specially to that class ol'cook-stoves in which the fire-pot is lined with corrugated cast-iron in the place of firebricks; and my object is to provide a back ferring to the accompanying drawing, in
which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lining. Fig. 2is a longitudinal cross-section through the line m .10 of Fig. 1.
It is demonstrated by experience that from the action of heat the central portion of the back lining of the fire-pot is the first part to become warped and burn through, and when burned through the lining has to be replaced with no little trouble and cost. To obviate this difiiculty I provide a corrugated cast iron lining-plate, A, differing from the ordinary plate in having a central portion, 0, con cave longitudinally, and equal in length to about one-half of the whole plate. The concavity faces the fire-pot. At each end of this concave portion a slideway is formed, with overlapping ears or lugs a, to aid in retaining in its place the slide B, which rests upon the sill b. This slide is a piece of cast metal corrugated upon both sides and made to exactly cover the concavity. Its surface is in a line with the face of the lining, so that the continuity of both remains unbroken. As soon as this plate begins to warp a little it can be slipped out, reversed, and returned to its place, being thus made to last much longer than if it were stationary. When finallyburned out or destroyed it can be replaced by a new one at a trifling cost, and with no diflicult-y, thus obviating the necessity of removing the whole lining.
By having an intervening air-space between. the slide and the back of the lining the latter is protected in a great measure from the action of the heat, and is thus more durable.
I do not wish to limit myself to the material or to the particular formation of the parts; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fire-pot lining of double thickness at and on each side of its center, with the front portion removable and reversible, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described lining for fire-pots, consisting of the plate A, with a central concavity facing the pot, and a reversible slide, B, secured thereto with its outer surface in line with the surface of the plate A, the whole constructed and united substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Witness my hand this 16th day of May, A. D. 187 6.
