Description

UNrrED sTA'rEs PATENT oEEicE.
HALVOR HALVORSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO SLOCUM & WATKINSON.
MINIATURE-CASE. V
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,501, dated March 25, 1856.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HALvoR HALvoRsoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miniature- Cases; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
Of the said drawings, Figure, l, represents a view of the interior of one of my improved miniature cases as it appears when open. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal and central section of it under such circumstances. Fig. 3, is a transverse section of it. Fig. 4, is a side view of it as closed.
The said miniature case consists of two parts A, B, hinged together at, C, and provided with a clasp, D, like the French porte monnaies in common use. The porte monnaies referred to are made with flexible leather sides respectively secured to surrounding frames of metal. This will not answer for a miniature case, whose sides require to be made of a stiff material such as will not yield so as to cause injury to the picture inclosed between them. For this purpose I compose each leaf or part A, B,
of two rectangular frames, a, Z), a sunken or dished plate, c, and a leather or embossed covering,l cl. The two outer frames, a, a, of each half are hinged together and each-is provided with a lip, e, extending entirely around its outer boundary and made to inclose the dished plate, c, and the second frame, Z), as seen in the drawings. The said plate, c, is made to project through the frames, and previously to being put in place therein is to be covered with a layer or covering, d, of leather or some other suitable material, embossed or not as occasion may require. After they parts composing each half of the oase are arranged as seen in the drawings, they are confined together by rivets (as seen at f, f, &c.) made to pass through them.
As miniature cases are usually finished, withanother rectangular frame, g, eXtending around within one of the parts and covered with velvet for the purpose of securely holding the picture and the glass covering thereof in place, it is found to be very difficult if not impossible to glue or cement this frame to a surrounding frame when made of metal. In order to accomplish this I place between the metallic dished plate, c, and the frame, Z), and previous to uniting them together a rectangular frame or piece of pasteboard, 7L, or some other equivalent material, to whose inner edge, glue or cement will readily 'and firmly adhere.
The frame, g, when put in place in the case, can be glued or cemented to the inner edge of the said frame, z', and by such means be made to adhere to the case with great tenacity.
IVhat I claim as my invention, ish
l. The combination of the metallic dished bearing plate, c, the leather or embossed covering, d, and the two frames, a, the whole constituting one portion or half of the case as specified.
2. And in combination with the metallic confining frame, and the velvet covered glass holder or frame, g, I claim the frame, h, made of pasteboard or other equivalent and applied for the purpose as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my signature this second day of March A. D. 1853.
