IMPROVEMENT IN BED-SPRINGS.
Specification forming partici' Letters Patent No. 144,984, dated November 25, 1873; application filed May 14, 1873.
To all whom. it may concern: Be it known that I, NVM. W. JONES, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Compound Bed-Spring, of which the following is a specication:
The object of my invention is to prevent lateral swaying of the slats and springs of a bedstead, without decreasing the number or increasing the Width of the said slats, and I attain this object in the manner plainly shown by the figure in the accompanying drawing, by constructing the springs in pairs of a single piece of wire, so bent as to form two coupled spirals, A and B, each surmounted by an independent loop, b, for the reception of a slat.
It has been usual heretofore to construct compound or coupled bed-springs with a single loop, extending across the space between and supported by the two spirals, but the objection to this plan is that the slats, owing to the space occupied by the two spirals, must be at a considerable distance apart, an objection which has been but imperfectly overcome by increasing the width of the sla-ts.
By providing each of the coupled spirals with a separate loop, b, in accordance with my invention, lateral swaying of the slats and springs is as eiectually prevented as by the ordinary arrangement, while the advantages are obtained of a direct pressure upon the springs, and of the use of a number of com- WM.
