REELING MECHANISIM.
Application led March 28, 1918. Serial No, 225,341.
To (f/Z 'io/mardi may concern.'
lie it lrnown that l, MORRIS l?. HOLMES, ar en of the `United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State oit il ew Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Beeling lvlechanism, ot' which the following is a hill, clear, and exact specification.
lily invention relates to reeling mechanism.
.lt has tor its object to provide an improved reeling mechanism which, while not limited thereto, is especially adapted to use in connection with electrically propelled machines, and particularly to those used in mines. A. further object of my invention is to provide improved reeling mechanism ycially adapted to use in connection with e machines and comprising` an imer reel truclr adapted to be connected o the mining` machine in such a manner as to be moved about the mine therewith, and equipped with an electric cable reel adapted to supply the current to the mining machine motor as the latter is moved from place to place. lilore specifically, my invention has for its object to provide an improved reeling' mechanism wherein the reel is mounted and actuated in an improved manner, and whereby the movement of the same is con- 'fi liet through improved cooperating mecharhese and other objects and advarr ,es ot my improved construction will, however, hereinatter more fully appear.
accompanying drawings, l have ln the shown "for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
ln these drawings,-
1 is a plan view of my improvement applied to use in connection with a mining machine. l
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the reeling mechanism, taken substantially on line 2*-2 ot Fig. 4.
Fig. 3 an enlarged sectional view of the reel driving and controlling` mechanism shown at the lett hand side ot Fig. 2.
Fie. l is a sectional view taken substantj .3 tially on line l-i of Fig. 3.
5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 6-6 ot Fig. 3.
ln this illustrative construction, it willbe observed that l have disclosed a motor driven mining` machine 1 mounted on a usual truck 2 which is adapted to be transported from place to place on the mine track 3 and supplied with power through a short lead connection e which in turn has its conductors electrically connected in a well known manner, as shown at 5, to a conductor cable 6 wound on a reel 7 which is in turn carried on a supplemental or trailer reel carrying truck 8 mounted on wheels 9 and herein shown to be connected to the truck 2 by means of a pivoted draw bar 10.
ln my improvement, it will be observed that, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, l have mounted the reel Z coaXially with the wheels 9 upon the trontaXle 11 of the reel carrying truck 8, the reel being shown herein as fixed to a sleeve 12, which sleeve in turn encloses the axle and is suitably journaled on the frame of the truclr 8. lt will also be observed that the power for rotating' the reel is derived from the truck wheelsu More specifically, it will be noted that, in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the left hand wheel 9 is provided with a coaxially disposed cap 13 suitably attached to the outer side of the wheel by means oic bolts 14 and rotatably mounted on the end ot the aXle 11 and held in place thereon by a suitable washer and Cotter connection 15. rlhis cap 13 in turn houses within the same a ratchet wheel 16 which is splined, as indicated at 17, to the axle or shaft 11 and is engaged, by a pawl 18 equipped with a well known form or spring 19 and pivotally mounted on a bolt 2O carried by and rotatable with the wheel about the ratchet, the bolt also being shown herein as serving as an additional means 'for clamping the cap 13 to the wheel 9. A similar mechanism to that just described is, it will be noted, also provided at the opposite end oi the shaft 11, for a purpose hereinafter described.
its shown, the right hand wheel 9 is provided with an inner annular bearing` flange 21 cngageable with a cooperating` bearing- 22 formed on a sleeve 23 which is in turn fixed to the axle 11 within the wheel, and preferably termed integral with the ratchet wheel 16 and so disposed that it abats against one end af the reel sleeve 12. rlhe left hand wheel 9 is, moreover, provided with a similar flange 24 cooperating with a bearing member 25 herein formed integral and reel sleeve 12 at a point within the internal gear 26 and iiXed to one end of the reel sleeve 12 in such a manner that the two elements rotate together. Attention is also directed to the fact that the stud 28, which acts as an axis for the intermediate pinion 27, is itself carried by a rotatable trame w preferably disposed between the internal gear and a part of the frame 8, the same preferably being journaled upon Yone oit the bearing` members 31 which act as journals for the sleeve 12. Attention is also directed to the fact that the rotation of this frame 30, and, therefore, the rotation oi the axis of the pinion 27, is controlled by means o! a braite band 52 operatively connected at 33 to the frame ina well known manner and halide; braking eil'eet controllable throulgh rods 34 connected to an ,operating lever 35.l 1
ln the operation of my improved construction, it will be observed that when the mining machine 1 is moved forward on the track 3,.i. e., toward the left from the position shown in Fig. 1, the pawls 18 will rotate freely with the wheels 9 relative to the ratchet wheels 16 in such a manner as to enable the 'reel to be entirely disconnectedy from the drive and thus permit the cable to be drawn oil freely in the desired manner as the machine moves forward. l/Vhen, however, the ldirection of movement oit' the machine 1 is reversed and the same is backed along the track, it will be observed'that the pawls 18 will thenbecome operative, transmitting` the rotation or the wheels 9 to the ratchet wheels16, the axle 1l, and the internal gear 26. As a result, it willbe observed that when the brakel band 32 is applied and the stud 28 is 'thus held stationary, the pinion 27l will be rotated and in turn transmit rotation to the sun gearv 29 at such 'wiel automatically to compensate for the difference in diameter'between the wheel and the veel, the cable thus :beine: taken up as desired as the machine is movedibackward. Obviously, if desired to wind the reel by hand at any time, rotation of the same maybe permitted byinanipulation of the brake band 82, the latter whenit is released acting` to permit the stud 28 and Apinion 27 to rotate with the internal gear 26 about the'sun gear 29 as an axis;
As a result ot my improved construction, it will be noted that it is possible-to cont-rol they reel in the desired manner, the same beingy free to unwind as the machine moves forward, andat the same time being automatically operative to wind up the cable vwhen the machine is backing, and likewise automatically disconnected when the forward movement of the machine is resumed. It will also be observed that, due to the use of the ratchet mechanism on each end oit the axle, the reel driving` device lis 'rendered in theieel is disposed coaxially with axle and wheels, it is possible to produce an exceedingly simple and compact construction well adapted to use in low entries. It
will also be noted that while this improved construction may, if desired, be adaptedto use in other relations, it is especially adapt ed to service in connection with a truck oi" the type shown, the improved arrangement through its compactness yenabliifig a relatively large space on the truck to be available for other purposes. rllhese and other advantages vol" my improved construction will, however, be clearly apparent to thosev skilled in the art. A While I have iii this application specilically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope .ot the appended` claims. v
i VVhatl claim as new by Letters Patent is:
In a reeling' mechanism adapted for use upon ay traveling memberwhich is adapted in operation to travel alternately in opposite directions, a reel and means whereby said reel may automatically unwind upon one movement oil said member and rwind upon the other comprising a shaft, a member rotatable in oppositedirections as said lhrst mentioned member moves in opposite directions, a unidirectional positive driving' connection between the said rotatable member and saidv shaft, and cooperating driving mechanism between said shaft and said reel.,`
