Be it. known that I, FRANK L. Sessions, a citizen of the United States,--residing at Columbus, in the county ot' Franklin and State ot Glue, have invented certain new` and uses.

This invention relates to improvements in electric locomotives, it being particularly adapted for use in connection with locomotives used for hauling cars in mines.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a cable-reel attachment, carried by the locomotive and operated by a movable part thereon. The cable which is Wound and unwound on the reeling mechanism att'ords a supplemental means for conducting current to the motor or motors on the locomotive when it is desired to have the locomotive leave the main tra-cle in the main enn tries' of the mine and haul cars to and from rooms leading otltrom the side entries.

l-leretoitore in the construction of cable reeling` devices for locomotives of this type, conside able dilliculty has been. experienced in providing means tor operating` the reel or drum so that it will properly Jpay out and wind up the cable the locomotive is moving away from or approaching the points at which the cable is connected with the electrical circuit. In payingout the cable, in order to prevent back-lashing of the reel, l have found it advisable to interpose a bralti ingmcchanism bctiven the reel and some stationary part of the locomotive, and in wint'ling up the cable l have found it particularly desirable to have the cable wound on the reel at a speed greater than the speed ot' travel ot the locomotivej so as to insure that the Wheels oi the locomotive will not run-over land mutilate the cable.
In order to accomplish the above results7 namely, oi having the reel ivind up the cable at a greater rate than the spe d of travel of the car. and pay out the cable under tension as the car moves away from thev point at which the cable is connected to the main conductor, l arrange to drive the reel shaft 'from the armature shaft. of the front motor and interposc between the armature shaft and the rcel shaft a train of oiver-transmitting drums, including therein a positive clutch and a friction clutch, he positive clutch being` adapted to operate only when the locomotive isrunning toward the paid out cable.

When the locomotive is traveling so as to pay out cable the armature shaft 13 revolves the pawl carrier clockwise and the pawls ride freely over the notches or teeth i'n the Wheel 16,but when thelocoinotive is run ning in the opposite direction and it is essential that thev cable should be 'wound up,y the said pawls engage with the walls of the notches in the wheel 16 and the said wheel is positively driven.
