To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, VVILLn'rr J. HICKMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a portable hoist for bailing lines used in connection with wells.
An important object of this invention is to provide a portable hoist for bailing lines having novel means whereby the same may be expeditiously set into operation so that the loss of time on the part of the drilling crew will e reduced to a minimum.
Further the invention aims to provide a portable hoist for bailing lines which may be driven by the regular drilling machinery and having novel means whereby the speed of the same may be varied.
A further and equally important aim of the invention is to provide a bailing hoist which dispenses with the necessity for reeling the drilling line from draw works and rereeling the same line or bailing line each time the well is bailed, thus saving time for the drilling crew and excessive wear on the line both in reeling and in moving.
By the use of this invention the drilling operation is greatly expedited and the cost of the same is materially reduced.
Other objects and advantages vention will be apparent during of the following description.

As illustrated particularly in Figure 1 a pair of standards extend upwardly from the skids 5 and are provided with cap bearings 8 which support a shaft 9. A drum generally designated by the numeral 10 is secured upon the shaft 9 and is provided with a hub 11 and end flanges 12 and 13, the said flanges forming a means to hold the cable 14- in position on the drum.
When the cable is connected to the drum it is also trained about a spooling sheave l8 rotatably mounted upon a spooling shaft 20 connected at its ends to the standards 6.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 the flange 13 is provided with a drum 22 about which a brake band 24 is extended. The brake band which is provided with a lining 26 has one end connected to the spooling shaft 20 by means of an attaching strap 28 and by means of a pair of spaced ears 80. The spaced cars 30 are connected to the attaching strap 28 by means of a pin 82. The cars 30 which are of elongated formation are rigidly secured upon the shaft 20 but when the shaft is manually rotated by a means to be later described the outer terminal portions of the ears will be moved either downwardly or upwardly for operating the brake band. It will be seen that when the outer portions of the ears 30 are moved downwardly the brake band 24 will be tightened about the drum 22 and when the ears are moved upwardly or in a clock" wise direction the brake band will be loosened. The brake band forms a means whereby the speed of the drum may be varied.
A brake lever 29 is provided with an attaching portion 35 secured upon the spooling shaft 20. It will be seen that when the lever 29 is operated the shaft 20 will be moved in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction for controlling the brake hand.
The shaft 9 has a sprocket wheel 36 mounted thereon and engaged by a sprocket chain connected to a suitable source of power. The sprocket wheel i provided with a hub 38 having oppositely arranged sockets 39 receiving the extensions 40 on a clutch section ll splined upon the main shaft 9.
When the clutch section ll is moved longitudinally into engagement with the hub 38 the driving connection provided between the sprocket wheel 86 and the main shaft whereby the drum is rotated.
The clutch section 4-1 may be moved longitudinally of the main shaft by means of an operating lever 44 having its forward portion provided with a yoke 46 extending on opposite sides of the clutch section. Suitable means are employed for connecting the upper and lower sides of the yoke L6 to the clutch section so that the same is constrained to operate with the lever. l-Vith reference to Figure 2 it will be observed that the forward portion or the lever is pivotally supported by means ot a bracket 47 secured as indicated at 48 to the adjacent standard 6.
In operation, when it is desired to wind the cable upon the drum it is merely necessary to establish a driving connection between the drum and the main shaft 9 by means oi the aforesaid clutch section'and when the power unit is set into operation, the drum will be rapidly rotated for winding the cable thereon.
The improved line hoisting apparatus may be conveniently mounted upon the platform of a well and secured thereon by bolts or other suitable fastening;- devices.
