Be it known that l, Oscar: B. BJoiiGn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ,Portlanth county of Wultnomaln and State of Oregon, have Yinvented a new and useful Improvement in Engines for Log Yarding, Skidding, Etc., of which the following is a specification, lthe principle l' of the linvention being herein explained and the best-mode in which I have contemplated applying-that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions. y
The'present invention'relatesto log yarding or skiddingengines, and the present construction provides three winding drums, two of them high speed drums and one'of them a low speed inhaul drum, all of the drums being so driven that the cables wind on to the drums from their upper sides. The particular feature of importance is vthe arrangement of the driving mechanism' wherebythe drums may all hev rotated in the same direction and at the ldesired speeds,-
this driving mechanism kbeing so arranged as not to interfere with the upper side winding of the cables. To the accomplishment Vof the foregoing and related ends, said iiivention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described andparticularly pointed out in the claims. n
The annexed drawings and thefollowing description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may` be used. yIn said annexed drawings:

The present yarding or skidding engine consists of a suitable base or frame 1 at one end of which is mounted a source of motor power such as an-intei'nal combustion engine 2 having a radiator 3. Ahead of he motor is mounted a driving shaft 5 carried in suitable bearings 6 in the frame and this shaft is driven from the engine shaft 4 by a chain 7 in mesh with the gears 8 and 9 on shafts 4 and 5 respectively. The .shaft 5v is thus rotatedy at relatively high speed and in the saine direction as the motor shaft 4. The gears 8 and 9 are mounts/doll ends .0f .the Shafts 4 and ..5 which extend beyond the frame members and the gears and shaft are preferably enclosed in a suitable casing 10. Mounted forwardly of and above the plane of shaft` 5 is a second shaft 11 in bearings 12 this shaft carrying the two high speed winding drums, 13 and 147 the drum .13 being the haul back drum and the druml 14 being the .straw drum. Mounted on the shaft 5 is a gear 15 in mesh with a large gear 16 on sha-ftll and *this large gear 16 is adapted to drive either' drum 13 or drum 14 'through friction clutches or driving devices. 17 and 18.
The end of shaft opposite to gear 9 extends beyond the frame and is provided with a chain gea-r 19 which is connected by a chain 22 to a gear 20 mounted on the extending end of a shaft 21 mounted aheadV of shaft 11 and below the latter. This silent chain is enclosed in a casing 23 and thev shaft 21 is thus driven inthe saine direction as are the shafts 4 and 5. Ahead ofthe shaft 21 is the second drum shaft 25 carrying the inhaul drum 26 and this inhaul drum 26 is driven through either of a pair of friction devices or clutchesk27 and y23, theV clutch 27 engaging the drum with a gear 311m mesh with a driving gear 30 on shaft 2l, while the clutch 23engagesthe drum with a. gear 32 in mesh with a second gearl 33 on shaft '2'1vthus givingA the yinhaul drum atwo speed drive.
f It will thus be seen that if the motor runs in a clockwise direction, as illustrated the arrow on Fig. 2, the driving shafts 5 and 21 will likewise rotate in a clockwise direc- `tion but the drums will all rotate in a counter clockwise `direction and thus the cables, 35, 36 and l3'? on the haulback drum,
` the straw drum and the inhaul drum, respectively, will` all bewoiindfin over the upper Asurface of the'drum as lis most desirable.
By using ahigh speed inotor,the straw and haulback drums, 14 and 137 are driven lat the desired :high ,speed through the chain drive from engine shaft 4 to shaft 5 and the gears 15 and 16. The inhaul drum isy drivenk at slow speed through the chain drive reduction from shaft 5 to shaft- 21 kand through either pair of gears 30 and 31 or 32 and 33. The driving mechanism is thus compact and the arrangement of the shafts such that the gearing is out of the way so that the cables may be wound in over theupper ,Surfaces of the drums.. The
entire driving mechanism is simple and the outside driving chains are encased against accident. rlhe arrangement of shafts and Vdrums meets thev requirements for a slow speed inhaul drum and high speed haulbaclt and straw drums in a yarding engine which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the fol* lowingclaims or the equivalent ,of such stated means be employed.
i therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention l. In a yarding engine, the combination of a base, a motor unit and driving shaft mounted at one end thereof, a pair of spaced udriven shafts mounted on said base, driving chain connections between said driving shaft and said driven shafts whereby the latter are rotated in the same direction at different speeds, a second pair of spaced shafts Vmounted on said base, windingA drums on ysaid last-named pair of shafts, and gears on said driven shafts and said drum shafts whereby both of said drum shafts are ldriven in the same direction.
2. lrna yarding engine, the combination of a base, a motor unit and drivingV shaft mounted at one end thereof, a pair of spaced driven shafts mounted on said base, driving chain connections, between said driving shaft and said driven shafts whereby the latter are rotated in the same direction at dii-ferent speeds, a second pair of spaced shafts mounted on said base, winding drums loosely mounted on said last-named shafts, gears mounted on said driven shafts and said lrnm shafts to rotate the latter in the same direction and clutches between said gears on said drum shafts and said drums whereby sait drums may be individually connected for rotation.
3. In a yarding engine, the combination of a base, a motor mounted thereon at one end and having a drive shaft extending transversely of said base, a pair of spaced driven shafts mounted transversely of said base, chain and sprocket connections between said drive shaft and one of said driven shafts and between said two driven shafts whereby said shafts are rotated at different speeds and in the same direc-tion, a pair of winding drum shafts mounted on said base, gear means for driving one of said drum shafts from one of said driven shafts but in the opposite direct-ion, other gear means for driving the second drum shaft from the second driven shaft and in the opposite direction, winding drums on said drum shafts, and means for clutching said drums to said shafts'.

5. ln a yarding engine, the combination of a base, a motor mounted thereon at one end and havinga drive shaft extending trans versely of said base, a pair of spaced driven shafts mounted transversely of said base, chain and sprocket connections between said drive shaft and one of said driven shafts and between said two driven shafts whereby said shafts are rotated at different speeds and in the same direction, a pair of winding drum shafts mounted on said base, gear means for driving one of` said drum shafts from one' of said driven shafts but in the opposite direction, two gears loosely mounted on said second drum shaft, two gears mounted on said second driven shaft and in mesh with said two gears on said second drum shaft, a winding drum mounted on said second drum shaft, and two .clutches mounted between said drum and said two gears whereby said drum and shaft may be clutched to either of said two gears to rotate said drum at two different speeds.
