Application filed March 25, `1920. ,Serial No. 368,724.:V
vTo aZZwtom t mag/concern.'
Be it known that I, OSTRANDER J; Parks, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at River Forest, in the county of Cook vand `State of Illinois, have invente-d a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of EdgeVelded Structures, of which the followingis a specification.
My Invention, generally considered, relates to improvement in the manufacturer of edge-welded structures regardless of the vparticular kind of structure, but more particularly to tank cars having anchorages on the tank portions of the cars col-operating with the under-frames of the cars to prevent undesirable displacement of the tanks on the under-frames.
Generally stated, my primary object is to augment the rigidity of the connection between elements secured together by edgewelding, and more particularly, and as relating to tank cars,
welding together of parts thereof, and more especially anchoring means for tanks, in
such a way as to cause these parts to resist to the desired degree the stresses to which v in use, thereby greatly` they are subjecte facilitating the manufacture of structures of this character and economizing in their production.
Referring to the accompanying drawingz* Figure 1 is a broken View in sidey eleviation of the tank portion and an anchor therefor, of a tank car, the anchor portion being secured to Ithe tank in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of one of the elements forming the anchoring means. Figure 3 is an enlarged view in cross-section taken through a portion of the tank and one of the elements of the anchoring to; and Figure 4, a broken, cross-sectional, view taken through the tank, the anchorin means, and the underlyingcenter sill of the car.
I have chosen to illustrate my invention In struction of tank the tank po-rtion 5 frame of the oar, is represented at 6, as formed of a pair car and which includes surmounting the underthis sill being illustrated of structural iron beams to provide for the edgemeans secured there' connection with a common form of con.
the center sill of whichl .thereby resulting in the 4 4vspaced apart with their flanges' 8 yand 9 turned voutwardly and having a 'bottom plate 10 and a top plate l1 secured'thereto and forming a box-like structure.y `The anchorage means forthe tank,in accordance with common practice, are provided at opposite lends ,of the tank,A one only of these means being shown andv each `comprising va pair of members 12 of steel, in the form of plates' having the portions 13 iiatwise opposing, and secured to, the under side of the tank 5 and at which the tank is supported, with the lower edges of the plates outwardly turned as shown at 14 at which they bear against the upper surface of .the
In laccordance with my invention the plates 13 are secured to the under side of the tank 5 in by welding vthese parts together valong the edges presented that there shall welding together of these parts,
parts together and resist the stresses to superposed sidewise opposed condition,
which they are subjected in use, I aperture the plates 13, as produce openings the desired length of edge welding is to" take place, the shown in the drawings, the Vtwo relatively long openings v17 in each plate 13,'being desirable for a construction of the form' and character shown, understood that in the welding ov eration, which may be performed inV any by perforating them, to therethrough affording at which the aperturing as of the tank but also along the edges of the apertures 17 as indicated at 18 in Fig. 3, rigid attachment of viz., by providing it'A being esirable way, as is well known, the plates 13 willv not only be welded along their outer edges fig? the tank to the anchoring means, and
and
an operation `vvhich may be ..readily, economically, performed.-

be understood as intending to limit it thereto as various alterations and modications may be made Wit-hout 'depart-ing from the spirit of my inventionyit beinglmy inten.
