To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE I. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Body Transoms or Bolsters for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a top plan'view of the left-hand portion of the bolster. Fig. 2 is a'bottorn plan View of the right-hand portion of the bolster. Fig. 3 is an elevational view of one ,end ofthe bolster. Fig. 4l isa similar v iew of the opposite end of the bolster, showing the diagonal braces or webs arranged in the'same direction. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the lefthand portion of the modified form of bolster. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the right-end portion of said modified form of bolster. Fig. 8 is a side elevational view of said modified form of bolster, and Fig. 9 is an end View of the saine.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in body transoms or bolsters for railway-cars, the object being to construct a device of the character described in such manner that it is able to well take carev of the strains to which it is subjected in practice. f
With this object in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts,all as will hereinafter be described,and afterward pointed out in the claims.
This application is a companion case to one filed contemporaneously herewith, said'companion case being a divisional case from the parent case, entitled Hopper-Bottom Car, filed February 26, 1900, ASerial No. 5,634. In said companion case the body portion of the bolster is shown as a casting having a recess in its upper portion -midway its length, the center bearing and side bearings bein gformed integral With said body portion. In the present application two castings are provided, which by being secured in position against the center sills and tied by bridging-plates form a most rigid structure. There is a spacin g-casting between the channel-beams forming the center sills, and the usual center and side bearings areprovided.
In 'the drawings, A indicates castings, preferably of steel, which are provided with circumferential flanges, said castings being substantially of I-beam form in cross-section and lightened by removing portions of their central webs. These castings are substantially duplicates of each other and are preferably braced by diagonal and vertical webs above the points where the side bearings are to be attached. The castings are made deepest at their inner ends, their outer ends being comparatively shallow and provided with shelflike projections a for the reception of the side sills of the car.
B indicates the center sills, which are shown in the form of channel-beams having their lianges turned inwardly, against the back faces of 'which channel-beams are riv- 'eted the vertical flanges of the inner ends of the castings.
C indicates a central casting provided with flanges along its side edges for attachment to the sills and with bottom flanges flush with the bottom faces of said sills. This middle casting C is provided with a vertical enlargement through which' passes the king-bolt D, said king-bolt in this construction being preferably introduced from beneath and suspended in its proper position by the use of a cross-key d.
E indicates a cover-plate, substantially of diamond shape, which bridges the space betweenthe sills, beingy secured to said sills by suitable rivets, said cover-plate being also riveted to the top flanges of the castings A.
y F indicates the bottom cover-plate, which, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is substantially parallel to the top cover-plate, this bottomv plate Fterminating short of the sidebe'arings a', which are formed integral with the castings A. As shown in Fig. 5, this bottom plate is slightly Wider than the bottom lianges of the castings A, to which it isriv'eted.

Castings A, before referred to, in addition IOO to having the marginal flanges are provided with vertical ribs a2 above the side bearings a', the junction of these vertical ribs with the bottom iianges of the castings being in thel form of an eye in order to permit the metal of which the casting is formed to have the.v same cross-section, as far as possible, and
thus prevent checking and cracking at the intersection of these ribs and iianges, which permitted to accumulate at this point.

Underordinaryconditionstheload,being carried at the ends of the bolster and supported at its middle or center bearing, will place this diagonal. brace a3 under compression, and to meet this condition I prefer to engage the cross-section of the same, as shown in Fig. 5, making it substantially elliptical. Of course when the car lurches or rests on the side bearing this brace a3 is under tension. As shown in Fig. 4:, this inner panel of the casting may be provided with a diagonal brace a4, extending in the opposite direction, in which event said brace being under normal conditions in tension instead of in compression the material of which the diagonal brace is composed need not be made thicker than the web.
The outer panel of casting A is lightened and formed with a diagonal brace a5, so disposed as to be placed in tension when a load is applied to the end of the bolster, and therefore this brace is preferably of the same thickness as the web of the casting. The web of this outer panel is cut away, as at a, to enable rivets to be headed, which rivets pass through the vertical end Wall of the casting and serve to secure the side walls in position.
In the above construction it will be noted that all rivets used are accessible toa rivetingmachine,and by dispensing with hand-rivetin g the cost of manufacture of the bolster is considerably lessened.
The structure shown might be termed a truss in that the bottom plate F forms the compression member or lower chord, the sills serve as the vertical struts, and the top plate E as the tension member or upper chord. Castings A act as web members for the cover plates or chords, and by being secured to the center casting the sills resist the shearing forces developed in the truss.
In Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, found on Sheet 2 ot the drawings, I have shown a construction wherein the castings are formed with sloping bottom iianges, and in which the lower coverplate (marked F) is substantially diamond shaped and bent to conform to the sloping bottom anges of castings A. The side bearings H are illustrated as separate parts secured in position by rivets. Braces a4 are arranged in the inner panels, which braces are in tension when a load is placed on the ends of the bolster, while the outer panels of the castings have vertical braces al. In other respects the bolster shown in Figs. 6 to f), inclusive, corresponds to the construction shown in Figs. l to 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a body-bolster, the combination with center sills of commercially-rolled form, castings arranged on each side thereof, rivets passing through said castings and said center sills, top and bottom cover-plates, and a casting intermediate said sills, said intermediate casting being secured to said sills by rivets; substantially as described.
2. The combination with center sills of commercially-rolled form, of a casting arranged therebetween, castings A on each side of, and directly secured to, said center sills, and top and bottom plates, all of said parts being secured together by rivets; substantially as described.
3. The combination with the channel-beams B, of castings arranged on each side thereof, a bottom cover-plate serving as a compression member of a trussed structure, said channelbeams forming the struts, and a top coverplate secured to the casting and to said channel-beams, said top cover-plate serving as a tension member, all of said parts being secured together by rivets; substantially as described.
4. The combination with the castings A, which extend from the center sills to beneath the side sills, the channel-beams B, forming the center sills, the middle casting C, through which passes the king-bolt, said king-bolt being introduced from beneath, means for securing the king-bolt in position, top and bottom cover-plates, and center and side bearings; substantially as described.
5. The combination with centersills of commercially-rolled form, said sills forming vertical struts of a trussed structure, of a casting arranged therebetween, castings on each side of said center sills, said castings being substantially I-shaped in cross-section and provided with diagonal braces, and top and bottom cover-plates secured to the tops 'and bottoms of the castings and center sills; substantially as described.
6. The combination with the center sills, of a casting arranged therebetween, castings arranged on each side of said center sills, a top cover-plate secured to said castings and to the center sills, a bottom plate parallel to the top plate and secured beneath the castings and center sills, and side bearings formed integral with said castings; substantially as described.
7. The combination with center sills, of a casting arranged therebetween, castings arranged on each side of said center sills, side bearings formed integral with said last-mentioned castings, the webs of said castings being cut away at their outer extremities, and

9. In a bolster, the combination with the if; tension and compression members, of va strut, webs secured to the strut and extending outwardly beyond the ends of said tension and compression members, for carrying the load, substantially as described.
