My invention relates to railway cars and more particularly to the car construct-ion adjacent the body bolster thereof.
r The principal object of the invention is 5' to produce a railway car such that the frame members thereof and the side and floor sheets may be conveniently and easily assembled and rigidly secured together.
Another object of my invention is to pro- 19 duce a body bolster of simple and rugged construct-ion especially suitable for drop bottom railway cars.
A primary feature of the invention consists in providing a body bolster of a railway car with upwardly projecting end flanges to which car side stakes may be conveniently attached.
Another feature of the invention resides in constructing a body bolster with end flanges projecting upwardly above the main body portion of the bolster and in associating therewith side stakes which are rigidly secured to the end flanges of the bolster in overlapping relation to their inner faces.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a body bolster having a top flange with upwardly projecting end flc nges which are respectively reinforced by inward- 1y projecting substantially centrally disposed,

A further feature of the invention consists in constructing a railway car with side sheets, floor sheets, and side stakes respectively secured to the inner faces of the side sheets and to the upper faces of the floor sheets, and in combining therewith a body bolster having end flanges respectively interposed between the side sheets and side stakes.

The outer ends of the bolster are respectively fashioned with flanges 15 which project on opposite sides of the web 8, each formed with a plurality of offset portions 16, 17 and 18. The car side sills are secured to the lower portion of these end flanges and instead of employing side sills which extend continuously from opposite ends of the car, sectional sills are preferably used. The side sill 19 which extends between the car end and the body bolster and is secured to the latter by rivets 20 is of greater depth than the side sill 21which extends between the two body bolsters of the car. The side sill 19 conforms generally to the offset portions of the lower end of the end flange and the side sill 21 is secured thereto in overlapping relation to the outer face thereof by rivets 22 in the recess formed by the offset portion 17 of the end flange. Thus it will be seen that the outer faces of the two side sills and of a portion of the end flange are disposed substantially in the same vertical plane.
The top flange 10 of the bolster inclines downwardly and extends on opposite sides of the web 8, the flange serving to support the floor sheets 24 and 25, respectively, which are secured thereto by rivets 26. The flange may be suitably recessed as at 27 so that the sheets may overlap each other without the necessity of bending one of them. The flange 10 is connected tothe web 8 of the bolster by an inclined portion 28, forming with the flange an angle member whose neutral axis is disposed substantially in the plane of the web to reduce to a. minimum any eccentricity induced in the bolster incident to the load carried thereby. The top flange 10 and the inclined portion 28 of the bolster merge into the plane of the web thereof inwardly of its outer ends. At these points the bolster may advantageously be reinforced by horizontal flanges 29.
The end flanges 15 of the bolster are integrally connected to and project upwardly above the inclined'top flange 10 to afford extensions 30 to which car side stakes 31 may be rigidly secured. Each of these upwardly projecting' extensions 30 is strengthened by an inwardly projecting rib or flange 32 which is preferably enlarged as at 32 at its inner end, the enlargement extending on opposite sides of the top flange 10.- The ribs 32 are preferably centrally disposed with respect to the end flanges and constitute integral contituations of the web 8 of the bolster. Since forces of considerable magnitude are transmitted to the ends of the body bolster from the adjacent side stakes,it will be readily appreciated that by providing the bolster with upwardly extending side stake attaching portions which are integrally connected to the web and top and end flanges thereof a stronger and more rigid construction is produced.
Each of the side stakes 31 is preferably of channel shape and has oppositely projecting side flanges 33 and a bottom flange 34, the side flanges 33 being secured in overlapping relation to the inner face of the extension 30 of the end flange of the bolster by rivets 35 and the bottom flange 34 being secured by rivets 36 in overlapping relation to the upper face of the top flange 10. Thus it will be seen that the channel shaped side stakes are secured to the inner faces of the side flanges on opposite sides of the reinforcing rib 32 and in effect form a housing for the latter. The bottom flange 34 of each of the side stakes is disposed in a plane parallel to the inclined top flange 10 of the bolster and to the plane of the floor sheets 24 and 25 and is provided with an offset portion 37 so as to be in surface contact with both of the floor sheets.
Above the end flange 15 of the bolster the side flanges 33 of the side stakes are secured to the inner faces of side sheets 38 and 39 by rivets 40. Adjacent their upper ends the side sheets are secured to a side plate 41 of any desirable construction. The side sheet 38 extends continuously from the side plate 41 to the side sill 21 While the side sheet 39 extends only from the side plate to a point adjacent the floor sheet 25. Each of the side sheets overlap the outer face of the portion 30 of the end flange 15 of the bolster and are securedthereto by the connecting rivets 35, the lower portion of the side sheet 38 being secured to the corresponding part of the end flange 15 by rivets 42. From the foregoing it will be perceived that the extensions 30 of the end flanges are respectively interposed between and secured to the side sheets and side stakes. In this manner these parts of the car construction are efi'ectively secured and tied together thereby producing a very rigid structure.
The sides of the inclined floor sheets 24 and 25 are flanged upwardly as at 44 and are secured to the side sheets 38 and 39, respectively, by rivets 45. The corners of the floor sheets are cut out as at 46 so as to pass around the inwardly projecting reinforcing ribs 32 and the upturned flanges 44 thereof are offsetas at 47 topass around and be secured in overlapping relation to the inner face of the upwardly projecting portion 30 of the end flange 15.
From the construction described it will be perceived that the various parts of the car are so designed and related that they may be rigidly secured so as to effectively withstand forces transmitted to them incident to the severe service conditions to which they are subjected.
I claim:
1. A railway car having a cast body bolster integrally formed with a web portion, an inclined top flange and end flanges, each of said end flanges being provided with an inwardly projecting reinforcing rib disposed above said top flange substantially in the plane of said web, the inner edges of said ribs being enlarged and said enlarged portions extending on opposite sides of the said top flange, and side stakes respectively overlappingly secured to the inner face of said end flanges.
2. A body bolster for a railway car having a substantially vertical web, an inclined top flange, and an inclined portion connect-- ing said flange to said web, said flange and inclined portion merging into said web adjacent opposite ends of the bolster, said bolw ster being also provided with substantially horizontal flanges adjacent the points where said top flange and inclined portion merge into said web.
3. In a railway hopper car, the combina- 1 tion with inclined floor sheets, of side sheets,
a body bolster having an inclined top flange in supporting engagement with said floor sheets, said bolster being provided wlth an extension projecting above adjacent portions of the floor sheets, said extension comprising a flange overlappingly secured to the inner face of the adjacent side sheet and an angularly disposed portion projecting inwardly therefrom, said top flange extending beyond the inner edge of said angular portion of the extension and being integrally connected to the flange of the latter, and a side stake overlappingly secured to the inner face of the flange of the extension and to the adjacent side sheet.

6. A railway car involving a body bolster integrally formed with a substantially verti cal end flange and with an upwardly projecting extension constitutinga continua-tion of the flange, a side sheet rigidly secured to said flange and said extension in overlapping relation to outer facesthereof, and a side stake rigidly secured to the side sheet and said extension in overlapping relation to the inner faces thereof.
7. A railway car involving, in combination with a side sheet and a side stake disposed onthe inside of the said sheet, a body bolster integrally provided with an end flange rigidly secured to the side sheet on the inner side thereof, said bolster being integrally provided with an upwardly projecting plate-like extension interposed between the side sheet and side stake, and a plurality of rivets con: necting said side sheet and side stake to said extension.
8. In a railway car, the combination with a floor sheet, of a side sheet, a side stake secured to said side sheet in overlapping relation to the inner face of the latter, and a body bolster integrally provided with a substantially vertical flange rigidly secured to the side sheet in overlapping relation to the inner face thereof, said bolster beingalso integral ly provided with a plate-like portion projecting upwardly above the floor sheet and interposed between the side sheet and side stake, and means passing through said plate-like portion for rigidly connecting the side sheet and side stake thereto.
9. A railway car havinga body bolster integrally provided with a substantially vertical end flange, a side sheet secured to said flange in overlapping relation to its outer face, a side stakeextending downwardlyfrom adjacent the top of the side sheet on the inside thereof and terminating adjacent the top of the body bolster, said bolster being integrally provided with an extension projecting upwardly above the lower end of the side stake, said side sheet and side stake respectively overlapping the outer and inner faces of said extension and being rigidly secured thereto.
10. A railway car involving, in combina tion with the floor and side walls thereof, a transverse load carrying member underlying the car floor and integrally provided with members projecting upwardly above the latter, each of said members having a portion rigidly secured to the adjacent side wall of the car and a portion extending inwardly therefrom, said last-named portion being pro- 5- vided adjacent its inner edge with laterally projecting reinforcing portions.

A railway car involving, in combination with the floor and side walls thereof, a transverse load carrying member underlying the floor and integrally provided with members projecting upwardly above the latter, each of said members being provided with angular-1y disposed plate-like portions, one of said portions being secured in overlapping relation to the inner face of the adjacent side wall of the car and another of said portions extending inwardly from the latter, said last-named portion being integrally provided adjacent its inner edge with reinforcing portions projecting from opposite sides thereof.
12. A railway car involving, in combination with the floor and side walls thereof, a transverse load carrying member disposed beneath the floor and having a substantially vertical web portion and a top flange for supporting the floor, said load carrying memher being integrally provided with angularly shaped extensions projecting upwardly above the car floor, each of said extensions having a plate portion secured to the adjacent side wall of the car and a plate portion extending inwardly from the latter in substantially the plane of said vertical web, said last-named late portion being integrally provided adacent its inner edge with a laterally projecting reinforcing portion.
13. A railway car involving, in combination with the floor and side walls thereof, a transverse load carrying member disposed below the car floor and integrally formed with substantially vertical end flanges and with extensions projecting upwardly above the floor, each of said extensions having a flange secured to the adjacent side wall of the car and a portion extending inwardly from the latter, the flanges of said extensions respectively constituting continuations of said end flanges and said inwardly projecting portions of the extensions being respectively provided adjacent their inner edges with laterally projecting reinforcing portions.
