To reduce the weight of the sections the portions of the webs intermediate the diagonal flanges and adjacent portions of the top and bottom flanges may be apertured as at 19.
Projecting inwardly of the opposite sides of the car center sills from each of the bolster sections is an upstanding plate-like integral extension, 20 interposed between the floor sheets of the car and the top of the center sills. These extensions project preferably somewhat beyond, the side'of the center sill opposite the one to'which the sections are respectively secured, the extensions being overlappingly connected by rivets 22. Each of the extensions lies in a plane substantially parallel with the web 11 of thejse'ctionof which it is a part being slightly offset therefrom in order that the plane of engagement of the two extensions may lie inthe longitudinal median line of the two sections.
- The upper edges of each of the extensions terminate in laterallyproje'cting flanges 23, respectively disposed in planes parallel to adjoining portionsof the top flange 12, the flange 23 of one section projecting in a direction opposite to that of the flange of the other section. Thus, when the sections are connected, the flanges 23 form, in effect, one flange constituting a continuation of the top flange 12 of the sections. The lower edge of each extension inclines downwardly toward the section of which it is a part andmay be fashioned j with a rigidify-ing flange 24. While each flange 24 projects on opposite sides of the main body portion of the exten sion 20 the portions of the flanges which proj ect from those faces of. the extensions adaptedito be broughtinto contiguous relation extend for only a short distancetmerging into the facesof the extensionsadj acent thepoints wherethey overlap; I

The side stakes'are so designed and are of such size that the inner flanges 38 thereof respectively engage the flange 31 of the upwardly projecting mem- I bers-29 so that forces subjecting the rivets 36 to shearing strains will be transmitted to the flanges 31 thereby minimizing such shearing strains; i
The top flange12 ofrthe bolster inclines downwardly in a plane parallelto the plane of the inclined floor sheets 43' and 44, the latter being connected thereto by rivets 45. WVhile the portions of the top flange between the webs 32 of the members 29 and. the center of the car have respectively the same downward inchnation'as the main body portion of the top flange 12, those portionsof the latter between the webs 32 and the adjacent car end The side edges of each of the floor sheets 43 and 4e are flanged upwardly as at 4:6 to afford means by which they may be secured by rivets 47 to adjoining portions of the side sheets 41 and 33, respectively. The upturned flanges d6 of the floor sheet 43 may also be secured by rivets 48 to the inner faces of the outer flanges 39 of the side stakes and the upturned flanges of the floor sheet at may likewise be secured by rivets d9 to the inner faces of the flanges 30 of the members 29 of the bolsters. Those portions of the floor sheet 4% overlapping the portions of the top flange of the bolster which are disposed in planes forming acute angles with the car sides are fashioned so as to have a similar inclination.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the bolster sections are so designed and constructed that they may be rigidly secured together and to the associated parts of the car structure in a most eflicient manner.
I claim:
1. A body bolster for railway cars having a web, a top flange formed integrally with the latter and projecting from opposite sides thereof, and portions adjacent the ends of the bolster formed integrally with and projecting upwardly from the top flange intermediate its side edges, said portions respectively affording means to which car side stakes may be attached.
2, A body bolster for railway cars having a top flange and having members projecting upwardly therefrom adjacent its opposite ends, each of said members having a web portion and oppositely projecting marginal flanges, said web portions serving as means to which a car side stake may be secured and one of said flanges aifording means to which a car side sheet may be secured.
3. A body bolster for railway cars having upwardly projecting substantially Z-shaped members adjacent its opposite ends.
4. A body bolster for railway cars having a top flange and portions projecting upwardly from the latter adjacent its opposite ends and intermediate its side edges, the portion of the top flange on one side of said upwardly projecting portion lying in a planesubstantially normal to the car side and the portion of the top flange on the opposite side of said portion lying in a plane forming an oblique angle with the car side.
5. In a railway car, the combination with a body bolster having a web and a top flange and provided adjacent its opposite ends with portions projecting upwardly from the latter substantially parallel to the said web, of s de stakes respectively secured to said upwardly projecting portions, the lower edge of said stakes being disposed above the top flange of the bolster.
6. In a railway car, the combination with a body bolster having an inclined top flange and a substantially vertical web and pro vided with portions projecting upwardly above the top flange substantially parallel to the web, of side stakes respectively secured to the said upwardly projecting portions, portions of the top flange adjacent the latter beingformed to afford abutments for the lower ends of the said stakes.
7 In a railway car having a body bolster provided with a top flange and with members projecting upwardly fromthe latter adjacent its opposite ends, each of said members having a portion substantially'normal to the car side and a portion spaced inwardly from the latter and substantially parallel thereto, and side stakes respectively secured to said members in the angle formed by the said portions thereof.
8. In a railway car having a body bolster provided with a top flange and with members projecting upwardly therefrom adjacent its opposite ends, each of said members being of angular shape and forming with the adjacent side of the car a recess for receiving a car side stake.
9. A body bolster for railway cars having a web and a top flange and being provided adjacent its opposite ends with portions projecting upwardly above said top flange to which car side stakes may be respectively secured, each of said portions being substantially parallel to the said web and being off.- set therefrom so that the associated side stake may be secured thereto in substantially the median line of the web of the bolster.
10. In a railway car, the combination with l a center sill and side sills, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively secured to opposite sides of the center and the adjacent side sill, said sections respectively having integral upstanding extensions overlying the top of the center sill and overlappingly secured together.
11. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill and side sills, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively secured to opposite sides of the center sill and t the adjacent side sill, each of said sections having an integral upstanding extension overlying the top of the center 5111 and terminating adjacent the side of the center sill opposite the one to which the section is secured, said extensions being overlappingly secured together.
12. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill and side sills, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively secured to opposite sides of the center sill and the adjacent side sill, said sections respectively having integral upstanding extensions rigidly connected in overlapping relation above the center sill, the upper edges of said extensions terminating in lateral flanges respectively projecting in opposite directions.
13. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill and side sills, of a body bolster I)? in) formed of a plurality of sections respectively secured to opposite sides of the center sill and the adjacent side sill, said sections respectively having inclined top flanges and integral upstanding plate-like extensions t overlying the top of the'center sill, said extensions being rigidly connected in overlapping relation and each having an inclined top flange constituting a continuation of the top 1 flange of its section, the top flange of one extension projecting in a direction opposite to that of the top flange of the other extenslon.
