Be it known that I, FRANK PRIMosHIC, a
. citizen of the United States, and resident of Woodside,in the borough of Queens, county of Queens, and `State of New York, have,
invented a new and Improved Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to a button, and' aimsv to provide a device of this nature which may be associated with a closure for actuatmg the same.
It isa well appreciated fact that closures have been placed upon the market which closures embody a pair of strips each presenting members adapted to interengage with each other to, lock thel closure together with an actuating member which co-operates with the strips to effect this engagement as well as dis-engagement of the members with each other. Also a pull element has been associated withthe actuating member by means of which the same was moved with respect to the closure strips.
Certain objections have been noted in connection with this latter element, in that the same presents a rather unsightly appearance which is not desirable when the closurey is placed in certain applications. A further objection has Abeen noted incident to the fact4 that when the closure strips were interlocked, the same have been visible, which is extremely objectionable, and as the closure was utilized this visibility -has increased in.- cident to the fact that the actuating member has naturally spread the coverings overlying the closure strip, apart, incidentto this engagement of the same.
Thus it is an object-of tion to provide a cover member in the nature L of a button which may be utilized in numerous applications but which is primarily 4intended for use in connection with a closure of the nature stated, and is adapted to act as a substitute forthe pull element commonly associated with the actuating member of the closure. Still another object of this invention resides in the provision of a button capable of being constructed at a relatively nominal ligure, and which will permit of the actuating member being operated more readily.
With these and further objects in mind, the present invention has reference-to a body adapted to be associated with thel actuating member of a closure so that the actuating member is moved to operate the closure, this body further co-operating with the covering with which the closure is associated, to produce the result aforementioned.

vIt will be seen in these various views that lthe reference numerals 10 and 11 indicate the two portions of the material with which the'closure is to be associated, the said closure, inthe embodiment illustrated including a pair of strips 12 providing in the usual manner outwardly extending headed arms 13, the arms of o'ne strip being adapted to extend into the space existing between the same includes a backing plate 15, which, in
the embodiment illustrated, forms a part of the actuating member 14, and affixed one to each end of.` the backing plate by means of. hinges 16, vare cups 17 and 18, thel latter beling sufficiently small to fit within the former when both of the same are swung to a closed position, such as has'been shown in Figure 2.
Further it will be noted that the tongue y19 is associated with the cup-18 and is adapted to extend through an opening 20 forming a part of the cup 17 when both of 'these cups are in closed position. In this connection it will be also noted that the cup 17 carries a catch member 21, which, when the cups are in closed position is adaptedto cooperate with the cup 18 at a point adjacent the4 point of hinged connection 16 of the latter. Thus in closed position, the cu'p 18 primarily swings to the position shown in 4igui'e 2, subsequent to w iich the cup 17 is `swung to a point at which it will overlie lthe cup 18. thus, incident to the engagement of this tongue with theedge of the opening, any movement of the cup 18 with respect to the cup 17 will loev prevented, and it will be necessary, in order to move the cup 18 to the position shown in Figure 5, for an operator to disengage the catch 21 of the cup 17 and to swing the latter in order to effect this operation.-
- Thusit will be seen that the objects of this invention have beenl accomplished incident to the fact that an object of extremely pleasing appearance and simplefconstruction is presented, and by associating this element with the actuating member 14, the latter may be pulled upwardly b y the cup 17, or
downwardly by thecup 18, to open vor secure the closure parts. Further, due tothe fact that the bodies of both the cups 17 and 18, as in Figure 6, are spaced from the backing plate 15 with which they are associated, itw'ill benoted that a groove is presented within which the edges vof the materal portions'lOjand 11 ride, the latter being-thus retained in roper position, and assuming'when the c osure is engaged, a
position at which their edges will nearly abut, as in the lower portion of Figure 1.
It will be understood that numerous modications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from i the scope of my claims; whiclare;
1. In .a separable fastener, interlocking elements, an actuating member forinterlocking and disengaging said elements, and a cover forsaid member pivotally connected thereto.
2. In a separable fastener, separable ele-` ments operating to successively lock and unlock,mean's for locking and unlockingsaid elements, and a cover for said means pivoted elements, and a cover for saidmeans includ-f ing, cooperating membersv pivoted toy said means and nested one within the other when the same are in covering position.
5. In a separable fastener, separable elements operating to successively lock and unlock, means. for locking and unlocking. said elements, and 'a cover for said means including cooperating mI mbers-pivoted to said means andv nested one ithin the other when the same are in covering position, saidcooperating members providing grips for operating said actuating means.l
6.
