The present invention relates to a buckle which is particularly designed and intended for use in connection with a belt to beworn by a person and the object of the invention is to produce a buckle which will effect a V tight locking and holding pressure upon the belt when the buckle is in norma-l use` and further, to produce buckle which will have the gripping element positively moved and held in gripping position and positively moved to ungripping position, and 'thereby avoid any accidental release of the belt while the buckle is being worn.

Referring to the dra-wings, l indicates an outer plate which will be called a face plate. This face plate is provided with downwardly extended flanges 2 and 3.
Cooperating with the face plate and its flanges, is a member which comprises a base plate 4 and having upstanding flanges 5 and 6. The base plate and its upstanding flanges may be assembled with respect to the face plate and its inturned flanges by inserting the flanges 5 and 6 inside of the flanges 2 and 3. These flanges have a close fit and additionally, the inner portions of the flanges 2 and 3 are provided with projections such as indicated at Ila which lit in suitable slots formed in the side flanges 5 and 6 such as illustrated at la in Fig. 5. This gripping member is mounted on a pin 10 which extends transversely between the side fianges 5 and 6, and the ends yof the pin occupy diagonally extending slots 1l and l2, which are shown particularly in Figs. 3 and 5. The ends of the pins are free to move .in the slot and' the ends may also turn so that thegripping member has not only a movement toward and fromthe face plate l. but it may also have a pivotal movement about the pin 10 as an axis.
Adjacent the gripping member is a link member` 18 which atits. forward end is pivotally mounted upon the pin 10 and at its rear end is pivotally mounted upon a pin 105 14 which extends between the side Vflange members 4d and 4e of the Vhinged portions 4b of the base 4t. l
lt will therefore be seen that the member 13 acts as a moving or driving, element 110 between the hinged portion lb and the clamping member so that when the hinged portion Lll is moved to its closed position, as When the buckle is. Worn, the gripping member is positively moved to its gripping position. and additionally the gripping member is maintained in its gripping position, so long as the buckle is being Worn and the hinged portion l" maintained in its closed position.
It is also apparent that when the hinged portion 4b is moved to open position as shown in Fig. 3, the gripping member is positively Withdrawn from its gripping position and maintained in its open position so long as the pivoted pbrtion el) is in its open position.
ln order that the gripping member may be moved to its most etiective gripping position, means are provided whereby the gripping member is tilted or moved about its pivot as it assumes its linal gripping position. This is accomplished by providing projections l5 and 16 which extend inwardly from the side flanges 5 and 6 and are so positioned that the extension or tail-pieces 9" ot the gripping member 9 will engage therewith when the gripping member is moved forward toward its gripping position. By the enga gement ot the ends oi the member l0 in the slots 1i and l2 the gripping membe is tilted so as to be moved to its most advantageous gripping position and maintained in this position by the parts which have betore been described.
ln Figs. 7 to l0 there is shown a. slightly modified form of buckle Which however is only modified in so tar as it relates to the means for positively tilting or moving the gripping member 9 about its pivot.
The base member shown in the figures mentioned is indicated at 2O and provided with the upstanding flanges 21 and 22. Each of these flanges is provided With a slot, one of which is indicated at 23, it being understood that the opposite flange has a similar slot. Extending between the flanges 2l and :22 and substantially lying against the base 20 is a member 24:, Which member is provided with projections 24a and 241 which extend through the slot before mentioned. The rear end of the member 24; is mounted on a pin 25 and the gripping member 26 is at the lower portion oit the extension provided with ears, one of which is represented at Q6 Which are pivotally mounted upon the pin 25.
The remaining portion oic the mechanism is the same as that Which Was previously described.
Pivoted upon t-he member 26 is a link 26h which at its opposite end is pivoted upon the hinged member 26.
Vllhen the gripping member is moved toward gripping position. it will in the initial stage or" its movement push the plate 24 forward and the extensions 24a and 24h willy come to the ends of the slots in which they are positioned. This then Will definitely limit the 'movement of the member 2a and consequently any additional movement ot the gripping member causes the gripping member to move With a tipping or pivotal movement so that the gripping member is moved into a substantially vertical position which is the position of its most effective gripping action on the belt or strap which is to be held.

A buckle comprising al face plate having depending flanges and a base member comprising' a base plate with upstanding flanges, the flanges of the base plate cooperating With the flanges of the face plate and thereby forming a closed buckle structure, a gripping member located between the tace plate and the base member and means for operating said gripping member.

A buckle having a face plate and a base plate, and flange members extending between the face and base plates, a gripping member extending between said flange members and mounted so as to move toward and from the face plate, and means carried by the buckle for positively moving the gripping member toward and from the face plate.

A buckle having a face plate land a base plate, and flange members extending between the face and base plates, a gripping member extending between the said flange members and mounted so as to move toward land from the face plate, a portion of the base plate being pivoted and connections between said pivoted portion and the gripping member for moving the same toward and from the face plates.

A buck-le having `a face plate and a base plate, and flange members extending between the face and base plates, a grippingmember extending between the said flange member and mounted therein for pivotal movement and movement toward and from the face plate, means for moving the gripping member toward and from the face plate, and means for simultaneously causing the gripping member to move about its pivot.
11. A buckle having a face plate and a base plate, land flange members extending between the face and base plates, a gripping member extending between the said flange member and mounted therein for pivotal movement and movement toward and from the face plate, said base plate having a pivoted portion, means connecting the said pivoted portion with the gripping member to move the lgripping member toward and from the face plate, and means for simultaneously' causing the gripping member to move on its pivot.
12. A buckle comprising a face member and la base member with intermediate flange members, said flange members being provided with oppositely disposed diagonal slots, a gripping member extending between the said flange members, means carried by the gripping member which extends into said slots and permitting pivotal movement of the gripping member, means for moving the said gripping member with respect to the said slots, and means for causing the gripping member to move about its pivot as the gripping member moves to gripping position.
13. A buckle comprising a` face member and a base member with intermediate flange members, said flange members being provided with oppositely disposed diagonal slots, a gripping member extending between the said flange members, means carried by the gripping member which extends into said slots, a portion of said base member being pivoted and means connecting the said pivoted portion with the gripping member to move the same with respect to the slots.

A buckle comprising a face member and a base member with intermediate flange members, said flange members being provided with oppositely disposed diagonal slots, a grip-ping member extending between said flange members, means carried by the gripping member which extends into said slots, a portion of said base being pivoted and a link pivotally connected with the said pivoted base portion and with the gripping member.
15. A buckle comprising a face member and a base member with intermediate flange members, said flange members being provided with oppositely disposed diagonal slots, a gripping member extending between said flange members, means carried by the gripping member which extends into said slots, and permitting pivotal movement of the gripping member, a portion of said base member being pivoted, a link member pivotally connected with the pivoted portion of the base member and p-ivotally connected with the gripping member for moving the gripping member, and means adapted to engage with the gripping member to pivotally move the same when it is moved to gripping position.
16. A belt buckle comprising a f'ace member, a base member and intermediate side members, a gripping member which is mounted for movement toward and from the face plate and also pivotally mounted,
whereby the gripping member is moved about its pivot as it moves to gripping' position.
