To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. RYT ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chlcago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to buckles and aims to provide a novel buckle devoid of the usual tongue for eliminating the use of holes or apertures in the strap secured thereby.
An object of my invention is to provide a buckle of this character in which a strap is secured thereto without the use of any rivets or stitching or other fastening means employed in the present day type.
A further object is to provide a buckle of this character which iseasily operated, cheap to manufacture and produces the best results with a minimum of wear in the parts thereof.
A still further object of my invention is to produce a buckle to which the strap is secured by means of a keeper designed also to act as a retainer for the free end of the strap.
With these and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like reference numerals designate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my buckle;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sect on on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the buckle previous to being clamped; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4-1 of Fig. 3.
In this preferred form, my buckle consists of a substantially U-shaped frame having a base 1 and arms 2. These arms 2 converge toward each other for a portion of their length and are then continued parallel to the end of the frame. Extending transversely between the arms 2 of the frame at theinner end of the parallel portion of the arms 2 is a bar 4 its width in cross section being equal to one-half the width of the arms 2 to which it is secured. This bar 4 rises from the bottom edge of the frame and has one face thereof slanting downwardly in the direction of the open Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 19, 1918.

Between the outer ends of the arms 2 is mounted a transverse shaft 9 which has pivotally mounted thereon a cam lever 8. This lever 8 is providedwith a curved handle portion 16 for a'purpose to be described. The lower end of the lever- 8 is formed with a cam-shaped surface 10'having serrations 11 thereon. Th s cam surface extends'between the arms 2 and is eccentrically mounted therebetween on'the shaft 9. This cam surface 10 is located on the under side of the lever 8 which is provided on its opposite side with lugs 17 adjacent the arms 20f the frame adapted to receive the shaft 9 therethrough to form a pivotal mounting for the lever 8.
The base 1 of the frame is provided with a rectangular aperture 7 extending therethrough. The inwardly converging portions of the arms 2 provide an enlarged space 3 adjacentthe end 1 of the buckle. A substantially rectangular looped keeper 15 is adapted to be disposed in this enlarged space 3 with its end surfaces 18 in engagement with the walls 2 to retain the keeper therebetween. This keeper serves to firmly secure the strap '12 to the end 1 of the buckle and is extended buckle to receive the free end 19 of the strap thereunder when the strap has been passed between the bar 4 and the cam lever 8 at the opposite end of the buckle.
The keeper 15 is disposed in the space 3' adjacent the end 1 of the buckle and the strap 12 is then inserted through the aperture 7 in the end 1, folded around the lOWer bar of the keeper 15 and extended back upon itself through the aperture 7 and terminates beyond the end 1. By this construction the lower bar of the keeper 15 will act as a wedge to secure the strap 12 to the buckle. Owing to the contact of the sides 18 of the keeper 15 with the walls 2 of the buckle frame. the keeper is retained within the frame and prevented from becoming disengaged.
