This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, one object of the invention being to provide, in a flexible staybolt structure, a simple and efficient mounting for the head of the staybolt, which may be quickly and accurately positioned within an opening in the boiler sheet so that no portion of the structure will project beyond the plane of the outer face of the boiler sheet and so that ready access may be had to the removable cap or closure of the mounting.
A further object is to provide a staybolt structure in which the mounting for the head of the staybolt shall have a substantial bearing within the opening in the boiler sheet and at approximately right angles to the axis of the bolt and approximately parallel with the planes of the faces of the sheet, and to permanently secure the mounting to the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet or to the outer face of the sheet in a possibility of displacement or leakage.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in theclaims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating an embodiment of my invention, and Figure 2 is a view of a modification.
In the drawing, the outer sheet of a boiler is represented at 1 and is shown with an opening 2, the inner portion 3 of which is made of less diameter than the outer portion so that an annular shoulder 4 is formed and disposed between the planes of the respective faces of the sheet and preferably nearer the inner face. The annular shoulder 4: is preferably of such width as to provide a broad seat for a bearing sleeve or member andlthe,l tts ii ff imei it i l extension 6 ich ent -t l" 7.3 j;PQn inns f. h ,openi sa mtw .bq h

The opening inthesleeveoutwardly be r ad. thes at.rorfiomi th ayb lt a s i nlarsed.s s nhataf m nsr a s l sa 10 and this enlarged portion of the opening I in the sleeve has athreaded Wall to receive an externally threaded cap or closure 11,- the' the latter being so proportioned that when in position on the bearing sleeve with its inner edge seated against the shoulder 10, (or on a. washer .12 on said shoulder) its outer face will not ,75 project beyond the plane of the'outer face of the boiler sheet but may be flush with the same. v v a When the parts shall have been assembled (either before or after the closure'll shall have been applied to the bearing sleeve), the bearing sleeve will be permanently se cured in place by welding, said bearing sleeve, as a rule, being permanently secured in place by welding to the wall of the open ing in the boiler sheet (as indicated at 13),
prior to inserting the bolt.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure '2, the enlargedportion 14 of the opening in the boiler sheet is made shallower 1 than in the construction shown in Figure 1 and providesa shoulder 15. The bearing member 16 passes through the opening in the boiler sheet and its enlarged portion 1 17 forms a shoulder 18 to restupon the 5 shoulder 15. The enlarged portion 17 of the bearing member projects beyond the outer face of the boiler sheet and is secured: in place by aweld 19 between the outer face of the portion 17 of the bearing member and the outer face of theboiler sheet. .The bearing member is provided in its inner portion with a seat 20 for the head 21 of a staybolt v 22, and a removable closure 23 isprovided for the bearing member. Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet provided with an opening 110 having portions thereof diifering in diameter whereby an annular shoulder is formed between the planes of the respective faces of the sheet, of a mounting for a staybolt having parts different in diameter located in said opening, the part of said mounting having the greater diameter resting upon said annular shoulder in the boiler sheet and welded to the latter, astaybolt having a head seated in said mounting, and a removable closure engaging" said mounting over the head of the staybolt.
2. The combination" with a boiler sheet having an opening and formed therein with an annular shoulder, of a bearing sleeve mounted on said shoulder so that its position will be confined between the planes of the respective faces. of the sheet, means permanently uniting said bearing sleeve to the wall of said opening, said bearing sleeve having a seat therein for the head of a staybolt, a staybolt having a head mounted on said seat, and a. closure connected with said gearing sleeve over the head of the stayolt.
3. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a mounting disposed in said opening and located inwardly of the planes of the respective faces of the boiler sheet, said mounting comprisin a bearing sleeve welded to the wall of said opening and having an interior seat for the head of a staybolt, a re-
