Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE.
JAMES M. ORPUT, OF MALTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY SAFFOItD, OF SOUTH GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLIPS FR WAGON-AXLE SKEINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,695, dated November 18, 1873 g application filed April 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ORPUT, of Malta, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Wagons; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the `annexed drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clip to be fastened around the thimble-skein of a wagonaxle for the purpose of attaching the drawchain, the same being intended, particularly, as an improvement upon the draft-equalizer for which Letters Patent No. 132,725 were granted to L. Kendlle, G. Gates, and myself, November 5, 1872.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of my clip. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My clip is made of two pieces, A A, of iron, of the same size, and of semicircular form, so that when put together they form a band. The interior of this band is made tapering or ii'aring, as shown in the cross-section at Fig. 3. O11 one side are ears B I3, through which a bolt, a, passes to unite the two pieces together, and on the other side are other ears, C O. These latter ears are bent outward toward the larger side of the c1ip,and clasp a link, D, which should project outward from said ears,
and held by a bolt, b, passing through the ears C C. i
This clip can be attached to any wagon-axle without the assistance of a blacksmith, and without taking ofi" the wheel, or without boring holes in the axle-tree. It is fastened around the thimble'skein by the bolts a b, the draw-chain being hooked or otherwise fastened in the link D, and the bevel or tapering form .L
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The clip consisting of the two equal-beveled pieces AA, forming a tapering band, and hav`- ing straight ears B B,curved ears C C, and` p link D, adapted to be fastened by bolts a b on the thimble-skein of a wagon-axle, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1873.
JAMES M. ORPUT.
In presence of- J. R. WELLs, W. A. MCOLUR.
